On #GISTAwarenessDay, there's encouraging news for people with advanced GIST. Recent clinical trial results show that continuing imatinib (Gleevec) can help people live longer and delay treatment resistance. Evidence like this helps guide better care. https://t.co/tHUv9qm7e5

Great sense of accountability. I had a dissimilar experience with my Alma mater- ABU Zaria who released me on study leave without pay when I got a 2 year contract elsewhere.
In less than a year, I got a letter asking me to return to my post or risk losing it. I refused and got fired.
Thankfully, I didnโt owe them a dime so nothing to refund.
Unfortunately I forfeited my pension contributions for 3 years.
Alhamdulillah for lifeโs experience

The Director General of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, has reiterated the commitment of his Institute to advancing cancer prevention, research, early detection, treatment and access through evidence -based policies, strategic partnerships and innovative programme that are transforming cancer care in Nigeria.
He stated this while making a presentation titled: Reducing Africa's cancer burden: Insight from the Nigeria Model, at the ongoing Best of ASCO Africa 2026 Conference, in Abuja.
He disclosed that the institute has trained about 140 early career scientists under its Strengthening Institutional Capacity in Cancer Research (SINCA) programme and awarded research grants to 24 researchers to strengthen local capacity.
He said the institute has also completed the first phase of Nigeriaโs Cancer Genome Study, which, according to him, seeks to identify genetic mutations associated with common cancers among Nigerians and lay the foundation for precision medicine tailored to patients in the country.
Prof. Malami, therefore, charged participants to use the conference as a platform to exchange knowledge, foster partnerships and develop practical solutions that will accelerate progress towards equitable Cancer care across the African continent.
The conference is with the theme: 'From Global Discovery to Local Discovery: Driving Africa to the cutting edge of cancer care.

Do you know the most common types of cancer in children?
These are:
- leukemias,
- brain tumours,
- lymphomas, and
- solid tumours such as neuroblastoma and Wilms tumour.
While childhood cancer is rare, it can happen.
When cancer is found early and treatment begins without delay, a child has a far better chance of surviving and growing up healthy.
#Alcohol can unravel the brain's connections.
Alcohol damages the #brain, leading to nerve cell death and the loss of neural connections.
When this process progresses more rapidly, it is often associated with neurological disorders, especially #dementia.

When Austin Smith ran out of options close to home, he traveled from Phoenix to UC San Diego Health, and found a path forward he didn't know existed.
Diagnosed with stage IV gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), a rare and aggressive cancer, Austin connected with Jason Sicklick, MD, FACS and Adam Burgoyne, MD, PhD at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. They enrolled him in a clinical trial involving temozolomide (TMZ).
The results were remarkable: significant tumor shrinkage that made a complex surgery possible. This July, Sarcoma and Bone Cancer Awareness Month, we're sharing Austin's story as a reminder of what's at stake, and what becomes possible when patients have access to the right team and the right trial at the right time.
