Karnataka under Siddaramaiah’s government is witnessing what can only be described as an undeclared emergency. Cadres of Hindu organisations are being harassed during midnight hours, with their GPS locations being tracked without adherence to any due legal process.

These individuals have no criminal background and no cases registered against them—yet merely being associated with a Hindu organisation appears to have become a punishable act in the state.

Fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution of India, including the Right to Life and the Right to Privacy, are being blatantly violated.

The actions of the Dakshina Kannada Police, who are allegedly visiting citizens’ homes at night and subjecting them to intimidation, have crossed all reasonable limits of law enforcement and civil liberty.

- The new Pakistani government is facing many challenges including skyrocketing inflation, increasing unemployment rate, debt burden, lower human capital development and energy shortages.

- In 1996, India accorded the MFN status to Pakistan and in August 2012 it announced a reduction of 30% in the SAFT which brought down tariffs on 264 items to 5% within a period of three years. Despite this preferential treatment, Pak followed a restrictive trade policy towards India.

- During the last 27 years, the exports of Pakistan to India have decreased at the annualized rate of 3.32% from $ 45 million in 1995 to $ 18.1 Million in 2022.

- It is imperative for Pak to normalise its strained relations with neighbours by forsaking its agenda of state-sponsorship of terror and putting all its efforts into ameliorating the lives of its people and bringing the economy back on track.

For many years, I have been saying that we create too much drama around the budget and raise expectations of policy announcements to an unrealistically feverish pitch.

The Budget is NOT necessarily the occasion for transformational policy announcements. Those can, and should, happen throughout the year.

Just as it is for all private households, the Budget is an opportunity to plan our finances prudently and with fiscal rectitude. The more we are focussed on living within our means and investing for a robust but sustainable future, the more confidence we will gain with global investors.

Which is why I was pleased with today’s budget.

—It was one of the shortest speeches—Brevity that is welcome and which communicates quiet confidence.

—No populistic measures were announced as has traditionally been expected in pre-election budgets. A welcome, and I hope, permanent approach!

—The fiscal deficit target was better than envisaged. Prudence scored a decisive victory!

—No major Tax and duty changes were announced. Businesses place a high value on stability and predictability and that was evident in this budget.

The really good news was the higher Tax to GDP ratio which has long been hoped for and which cements a strong foundation for fiscal flexibility and aggressive expenditure when it is needed. The FM can and should trumpet this more loudly…

Now, we can focus on getting back to work and executing our plans efficiently while crossing the ‘Setu’ to a more prosperous India..
