My mom wanted to send me homemade pickles. But I said ‘no’.

I was 27, living in New York, working on Wall Street. I didn't need pickles shipped across the world. The shipping would cost more than buying them here.

Three years later, I read the psychologist take on what I'd actually done. When you reject someone's offer to help, you're not just declining assistance. You're declining their need to matter to you!

Benjamin Franklin figured this out in 1736. He had a rival in the Pennsylvania legislature who hated him. Instead of trying to win him over with favors, Franklin asked the rival to lend him a rare book.

The rival agreed. They became lifelong friends. It's called the Ben Franklin effect.When people do something for you, they convince themselves they must like you. Otherwise, why would they help?

My mom didn't want to send pickles because I needed them.
She wanted to send them because SHE needed to feel useful to me. To feel like despite the ocean between us, she still had a role in my life.

Every time I said "I'll manage," I was taking that away from her. Here's what I learned after a decade of living away from home:

→ Accepting small favors isn't about you needing help.

It's about letting people you love feel needed.

Your dad wants to transfer ₹5000 even though you earn well?

Let him.

Your friend wants to pick you up from the airport even though Uber exists?

Say yes.

Your partner wants to make you tea even though you can make it yourself?

Accept it.

The people who love you don't want to solve your big problems. They want to matter in your small moments.

Let them. #lifelesson

An Airbus 380 is on its way across the Atlantic. It flies consistently at 800 km/h at 30,000 feet, when suddenly a Eurofighter with a Tempo Mach 2 appears.

The pilot of the fighter jet slows down, flies alongside the Airbus and greets the pilot of the passenger plane by radio: "Airbus, boring flight isn’t it? Now have a look here!"

He rolls his jet on its back, accelerates, breaks through the sound barrier, rises rapidly to a dizzying height, and then swoops down almost to sea level in a breathtaking dive. He loops back next to the Airbus and asks: "Well, how was that?"

The Airbus pilot answers: "Very impressive, but watch this!"

The jet pilot watches the Airbus, but nothing happens. It continues to fly straight, at the same speed. After 15 minutes, the Airbus pilot radios, "Well, how was that?

Confused, the jet pilot asks, "What did you do?"

The AirBus pilot laughs and says: "I got up, stretched my legs, walked to the back of the aircraft to use the washroom, then got a cup of coffee and a chocolate fudge pastry."

The moral of the story is: When you’re young, speed and adrenaline seems to be great. But as you get older and wiser, you learn that comfort and peace are more important.

This is called S.O.S.: Slower, Older and Smarter.

Yes. And there is a lot more that is wrong. If you check fare or time twice the fare shoots up. ⁦@Moneylifers⁩ and I had vastly different fares on the same infamous app which is ⁦@kunalkamra88⁩ ‘s favourite because I checked thrice to estimate the time to location!

This growth when flights operate HBX & KLH. Ppl forced to other airports. We h’ve used HBX,KLH ,GOX & Sindhudurg. On 14th Dec no flight connects Int”l dest, but available from airports. Airline route monopoly 7K-13K BOM fare & other under forced to serve HBX.

@lkatheeq Sir! Agree to Beyond Bengaluru… but problem they stop at Hubli Dharwad. Why not Belagavi? Everything that was for Belagavi taken away to Hubli Dharwad and gave it a dumb Suwarna Soudha for 10 day winter session.

Very true! Unfortunately, may not happen as most of these international schools are owned by politicians. They get the CA (civic amenities) lands in urban layout allotted almost for free. Hefty fees plus, must buy their cheap stuff from books to clothes etc. It’s a big scam.

do now. Schooling has become a racket run by crooks .
Time to tax the profits of any so called international school with fees above a certain level.

@Belagavi_infra @aaiblgairport People are forced to use nearby airports due to non availability of flights, exorbitant fares, & to an extent monopoly of an airline. Forced to reach IXG arrive via GOI, GOX,HBX, KLH & even at times SDW(Sindhurg). Get Alliance Air or Air India to connect IXG.
