World Tourism Day 2026

➤World Tourism Day 2026, to be observed on 27 September under the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism”, highlights the role of technology in shaping the future of tourism

➤In India, the sector is emerging as an important contributor to economic growth, employment, and livelihoods, contributing 5.22% to GDP and supporting 8.46 crore jobs in 2023-24

➤Domestic Tourist Visits reached 428.55 crore in 2025, while Foreign Tourist Visits rose to 2.53 crore and foreign exchange earnings from tourism increased to ₹2,76,831 crore

➤India is also strengthening its digital tourism ecosystem through e-Visa, the Incredible India Digital Platform and NIDHI+, with AI enabling more personalised and seamless travel experiences

➤Alongside digital innovation, initiatives such as Swadesh Darshan 2.0, PRASHAD, cruise tourism and tourism skill development are expanding destinations, improving visitor experiences and creating livelihood opportunities

➤India’s World Tourism Day 2026 celebrations highlight India’s efforts to build a more connected, inclusive, and sustainable tourism sector

Glad to co-chair the inaugural meeting of Group of Friends on Safety & Security of Shipping & Seafarers, along with Liberia FM Sara Beysolow Nyanti #GoFonS4 #UNGA81

✅ Highlighted that commercial shipping and mariners have been subjected to repeated attacks in the Gulf, the Red Sea, the Black Sea and other regions in the last few months.

✅ Pointed out that such attacks disrupt maritime commerce and have cost innocent lives, including of Indian nationals.

✅ Emphasized that the disruption from attacks has also led to prolonged confinement of seafarers on board, delayed crew changes & repatriation, separation from families, and psychological distress.

✅ Stressed that there is a need for stronger and closer cooperation between the international community in order to close ranks and deter such attacks.

✅ Shared that PM Modi proposed establishing a Seafarers Emergency Support Network during the recent BRICS Summit, which could connect the Maritime authorities and Embassies of countries concerned, facilitating distress alerts, medical assistance, communication with families, and support for evacuation.

A positive beginning today towards our vision of making the #GoFonS4 an inclusive platform bringing together major ship-owning member states, countries with largest numbers of ship registries, and those who provide the maximum seafarers.

Pleased to co-chair the event on ‘AI in the Context of International Peace & Security, with an Emphasis on Maritime Security’, alongside FM George Gerapetritis of Greece.

➡️ Emphasized the need to harness the possibilities offered by AI, anticipate its consequences and mitigate its risks. This calls for an approach that enables innovation while remaining conscious of its security implications.

➡️ Shared that the New Delhi Declaration emphasises democratic access to AI resources, building secure and trustworthy systems, investing in human capabilities and harnessing AI for economic growth & social good.

➡️ Highlighted that in the maritime domain, AI can enhance maritime domain awareness, search & rescue, disaster response, identification of suspicious activity and resilience of ports & critical infrastructure. At the same time, it can enable sophisticated reconnaissance, vulnerability mapping & cyber operations targeting vessels, communication networks & undersea infrastructure.

➡️ Underlined that increasing autonomy in maritime systems raises questions of attribution, accountability & escalation, while also compressing decision making time.

➡️ Pointed out that in the maritime domain, the UN Charter & international law, including the law of the sea, remain essential frameworks governing State conduct. Greater transparency, confidence building, capacity development, technical cooperation & exchange of best practices are essential to ensure that AI is developed and used consistent with these principles.

➡️ Reaffirmed that AI and maritime security remain important priorities for India at the United Nations.
