The future of cotton starts with protecting farmers.
Rajendran Ramasami, Director, @FSII_India and Managing Director of @Rasi_seeds, shares his perspective on the challenges facing India’s cotton seed industry and why farmers must remain at the centre of innovation and policy decisions.
With over 50 years of experience and seeds grown across more than 25% of India’s #cotton acreage this year, Rasi Seeds continues to focus on farmer welfare, research and innovation. The company is developing indigenous pink bollworm-tolerant #technology, now in its second year of trials, with encouraging results so far.
Rajendran highlights the need for timely government approvals for trials and genuine research, stronger accountability to curb illegal hybrid seeds sold by fly-by-night operators, and greater support for innovation. Such practices hurt both #farmers and the legitimate #Seed industry.
He also points to the growing challenges of cotton cultivation, particularly labour shortages and the need for mechanisation. Technology can be a game-changer in making cultivation easier, and the industry is keen to contribute through research and farmer-centric solutions.
His message is clear: honest efforts by industry and farmers must not go unrewarded. Timely decisions, a level playing field and support for genuine innovation are essential to protect farmers and secure the future of Indian cotton.

Cooperatives & Fertiliser Security: Strengthening India’s Agricultural Resilience from Production to the Farmer
Today, October 16, 2026, GreyMatters Communications, in partnership with FIJEEHA and IndiAgri and supported by KRIBHCO, organised a Knowledge & Policy Engagement Webinar on “Cooperatives & Fertiliser Security: Strengthening India’s Agricultural Resilience from Production to the Farmer.”
The discussion focused on how cooperatives, the right farm technology and strong farmer institutions can together ensure timely fertiliser availability, balanced nutrient management and the efficient use of fertilisers.
Dr. Tejinder Singh, General Manager (Marketing), KRIBHCO, highlighted the role of cooperatives in ensuring fertilisers reach farmers at the right time, supported by extension education and skilling. He also spoke about KRIBHCO’s farmer services, including soil testing and field demonstrations.
Dr. Manish Kumar, Senior Scientist, ICAR-Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Bhopal, said farmers need the right agricultural equipment for balanced fertilisation and better nutrient use efficiency. He pointed to proper seed and fertiliser application, and to calibrating equipment so that over-application and wastage are avoided.
Puneet Kashyap, CEO, Khushaal Honey & Dairy Producers Association (FPO), Punjab, noted that cooperatives have done a great deal to reach and educate farmers. Challenges remain, such as digitalisation of PACS and logistics during the peak fertiliser supply season. He added that farmers are gradually adopting soil testing, balanced fertiliser application and bio-inputs, and are seeing the benefits. Patience is key, however, as bio-inputs and sustainable practices take time to show results.
The session was moderated by Ashish Paliwal, Advisor, IndiAgri.
The webinar highlighted how timely availability, farmer awareness, appropriate technology and empowered farmer institutions can strengthen India’s fertiliser security and build a more resilient agricultural ecosystem, from production to the farmer.

India’s journey towards fertiliser self-reliance must go beyond expanding domestic urea production to securing the energy and raw materials that power it.
Pathways such as green hydrogen, green ammonia, carbon capture and indigenous coal gasification can help strengthen India’s fertiliser security while advancing cleaner production.
As MD, @HURL_INDIA puts in his incisive article in @livemint, for a resilient and sustainable agricultural ecosystem, the way forward lies in integrating production self-reliance, energy security and raw material independence.
@SIBAMOHANTY1@BharatUrvarak
India’s fertiliser security is not just about supply, but also how efficiently we use it.
In an exclusive webinar, organised by GreyMatters Communications and Fijeeha, Shri Gajendra Kumar, Joint General Manager (Marketing), KRIBHCO, shared that during the Kharif season, fertiliser supply reached 500 lakh tonnes against a demand of 383 lakh tonnes.
He emphasised that better nutrient management, healthier soils and diversified imports are all essential for long-term fertiliser security.
