On 27 and 28 February thousands of Nigerian workers went on nationwide protests against the increasing cost of living caused by what unions summarize as anti-worker economic austerity measures, that were introduced by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Trade unions' engagement in BHR is premised on ILO Conventions 87 (Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise) and 98 (Right to Organise and Collective Bargaining). BHR issues are part of trade unions’ demands for labour clauses to be in the @AfCFTA protocols.
Ms Ouko also attended the 2nd African BHR Forum 2023 on 5-7/09/2023, involving stakeholders from Africa to assess the progress in promoting responsible BHR conducts and corporate accountability in the region convened by the African Union, co-organised by UNDP and other actors.
The workshop occurred on 4-5/09/2023 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, sharing experiences among unionists in BHR discussions, developing strategies for unions and CSOs' role in the National Action Plan processes and creating an informal working group of unionists on BHR in Africa.
Ms Beatrice Ouko, TUICO’s Head of Internal Audit, participated in the workshop to strengthen unions’ involvement and strategies in African business and human rights (BHR) discussions hosted by the FES-African Union Office in partnership with the IndustriALL Global Union’s SSARO.

Today is #InternationalYouthDay and it is vital that we make space for the future leaders of tomorrow. Youth can contribute to building stronger unions through organizing, and include everyone regardless of employment status, sexual orientation or gender identity.
Happy International #YouthDay from @IndustriallZ.
“As future leaders, we must be equipped to tackle complex issues with holistic solutions, considering the social, environmental, and economic aspects of every challenge.”

Giving women special training can help increase their confidence so they can participate more actively in unions. Unions can also encourage other female leaders to act as role models, give talks and raise awareness.

Today I had the pleasure of speaking with fellows of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung’s Young Leaders Forum 2023 Cohort about Just Transition. Their vibrance and awareness of climate change and just transition impressed me.
We exchanged ideas on the impacts of the greatest threat to humanity, the climate crisis, and how addressing it raises challenges for social justice, the economy, the environment and the future of jobs in Africa and the globe.
There will be opportunities to generate new green jobs. Still, for people working in sectors dependent on fossil fuels or where opportunities for economic diversification are limited, we expect job losses. This will create tensions and inequalities.
Unless the transition to a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly economy is fair, the impacts of climate change will affect people in insecure work in carbon-intensive industries and fossil-fuel-dependent workplaces—inequalities will worsen.
This means we must maximise the opportunities for climate action while minimising and carefully managing its challenges through social dialogue and respecting fundamental labour principles and rights—this is the essence of Just Transition.
Last year, I attended this FES’ Young Leadership Forum as a participant; today, I was a facilitator (this is so heartwarming). Please consider FES-YLF when applications are open next year (for Tanzanian youth only). Great Stuff!👏🏾
Thank you, @FESTanzania, for the opportunity.
