Even the planet's most resilient desert survivors have started succumbing to extreme heat. Experts say it’s like nothing we’ve ever seen.
For centuries, camels have been celebrated as the ultimate 'ships of the desert,' renowned for their ability to thrive in arid environments too harsh for almost any other livestock. However, an escalating climate crisis in North Africa and the Horn of Africa is pushing these evolutionary marvels past their biological limits.
In regions like Ethiopia's scorching Afar desert, where summer temperatures frequently exceed 50°C (122°F), herders are witnessing unprecedented levels of suffering among their herds. Ali Umer, a veteran local camel herder, recently reported losing eight calves in a single month to the unrelenting heat.
He described a horrifying reality where the animals suffer from blistered feet and watery eyes, and the sand itself becomes so intensely hot that it burns their skin and singes their hair as they rest.
This crisis is not an isolated tragedy; it represents a systemic threat to the ecological and economic stability of communities that rely on camels for transport, milk, and meat. North and East Africa are home to approximately 80% of the world's dromedary camel population, and as traditional grazing areas dry up, pastoralist families are facing catastrophic losses.
Scientists and animal welfare experts warn that prolonged temperatures above the camels' comfort threshold compromise their immune systems, leaving them highly vulnerable to dehydration, disease, and death. With even the hardiest desert species struggling to survive, researchers are urging immediate interventions, such as strategic water distribution and emergency veterinary care, to prevent a total collapse of the region's agricultural backbone.

Armed men have invaded the Apiwtxa Indigenous village on the Brazil–Peru border, targeting indigenous leaders who protect their land from narco-traffickers and illegal loggers. Indigenous Peoples defend the world's most biodiverse forests — they shouldn't have to do it at gunpoint. @LulaOficial,
protect the Ashaninka and all border communities now.
It of utmost importance that we protect our front line indigenous protectors. This is a global issue. All eyes on Ashaninka.
Your 'doom quote' for today:
“I don’t think we’re out of time but I think we’re getting dangerously close to when we might be out of time. We will see [from the IPCC] a very, very clear warning that unless we act now, we will unfortunately be out of time.”

A catastrophic 73 percent decline in global wildlife populations over the past 50 years signals that Earth ecosystems are approaching dangerous tipping points.
According to the World Wildlife Fund Living Planet Report monitored wildlife populations worldwide have decreased by an average of 73 percent since 1970. Freshwater species have suffered the most severe losses with an 85 percent decline.
Conservation experts warn that this biological collapse threatens not only nature but also human survival. The primary drivers include habitat destruction from intensive agriculture climate change and overexploitation of resources.
Scientists stress that the next five years represent a critical window for action. Preventing irreversible damage will require fundamental transformations in global food production energy systems and financial practices. Stronger conservation efforts and a shift toward sustainable agriculture could still reverse these trends. Failure to act risks undermining the natural systems that supply clean air fresh water and stable food production. Protecting wildlife is therefore essential for securing humanity own future.
This audio reveals something heartbreaking:
the gradual disappearance of birdsong over time, the accelerating loss of biodiversity and the urgent need to protect our ecosystems.
A generation betrayed by a politics, a media & a society lacking the conscience, the courage & the imagination to end an economic system that necessitates the burning of their futures, their hopes & their dreams.
The most shameful betrayal in the history of our species.

Here's what's inside 🧵
We are in major trouble - not in decades, in the coming months.
The fossil fuel industry, politicians and lobbyists who got us into this mess and the media who didn’t stop them need to be held accountable.
Btw. I'm not aware of any models suggesting a "sudden collapse" of the #AMOC. The very serious real risk is that it soon passes a point of no return (tipping point) where it shutting down over the next 50-100 years becomes practically unstoppable.

"The planet is now warmer than it has ever been in modern human history, basically since the agricultural revolution 10,000 or 12,000 years ago," says climate journalist @dwallacewells. "We're running a pretty radical experiment."
Last week in the Alps the freezing temperatures stayed above freezing even at the highest peaks like Mont Blanc, 4,800m!
All Alpine #glaciers were melting
Sheets laid over the ice to protect from sun & heat felt like a veil draped over a dying patient
#ClimateChange is now !
