The state of Oklahoma has executed Jemaine Cannon. This was one of the last messages he sent to one of the folks on our call today, minutes before he was killed. And these were his final words in the execution chamber: “I confess with my mouth and believe in my heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, therefore I am saved. Thank you.” My prayers also go out to the family of the victim, Sharonda White Clark. We must honor the victims, but not with more killing. The death penalty doesn’t heal the wounds of violence. It just creates new wounds. It is time to stop killing to try to show that killing is wrong. Violence is the disease, not the cure. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Abolish the death penalty.
