Maritime risk remains elevated

Maritime traffic across two critical chokepoints is moving in different directions. Strait of Hormuz crossings declined to eight on 4 August, with most vessels exiting the Middle East Gulf and routing concentrated around the Iranian Unilateral Scheme. Bab el-Mandeb crossings rose to 34, but four dark transits, sanctioned vessel activity and shadow fleet movements highlighted continuing visibility and compliance concerns. A newly confirmed attack on Minoan Pioneer further complicates the outlook. For operators, headline traffic volumes remain less important than route transparency, vessel behaviour and the risk of further disruption.
