Despite privately acknowledging the virus’s deadliness, he withheld this information from the public, later claiming he didn’t want to cause ‘panic’—a justification many saw as an attempt to protect the markets and his re-election bid.

This approach stood in contrast to his frequent use of fear-mongering on issues like immigration or LGBTQ+ rights when it suited his political goals.

A study estimated that his rallies led to over 30,000 additional COVID-19 infections and more than 700 deaths. It’s also likely that 6-15% of those infected—between 1,800 and 4,500 people—now live with long COVID, facing permanent disabilities as a result.
