Reeflex 300–600mm @ReeflexCamera
Why This Isn’t a Zoom Lens — And Why That Matters
Let’s set the record straight. I hope I don’t sound like I’m splitting hairs here, but the new 300–600mm lens from Reeflex is not a zoom lens. There’s a lot of confusion out there about this thing being a “zoom,” and it’s just not. What Reeflex has built is a 3× teleconverter — a very different tool with a very different purpose.
A teleconverter is an optical multiplier. It sits in front of a lens and increases the effective focal length by magnifying the image circle. Photographers have been using teleconverters for decades — 1.4×, 2×, even 3× units on DSLRs and mirrorless systems. They’re not new, not exotic, and definitely not “zoom lenses.” They don’t zoom. They multiply. And this one only works when mounted over the iPhone’s telephoto lens.
And for the record, Reeflex isn’t the only company making iPhone teleconverters. Sandmarc and ShiftCam have both released similar long‑reach attachments. Reeflex is just the first to push into the 300–600mm territory with a 3× multiplier designed specifically around the iPhone 17’s telephoto system.
What “300–600mm” Actually Means Here
The “300–600mm” label isn’t describing a variable‑focal‑length optical system. There is no internal zoom group, no moving elements, no optical travel. The Reeflex unit is fixed. All the “movement” happens because the iPhone 17 Pro/Max has two telephoto positions you can shoot through:
4× (100mm) — the 48MP tetraprism
8× (200mm) — the 12MP sensor‑crop telephoto mode
The Reeflex 3× teleconverter simply multiplies whichever one you choose.
That’s how you get:
100mm × 3 = 300mm (48MP)
200mm × 3 = 600mm (12MP)
Nothing is zooming. You’re just switching between two native iPhone focal lengths and letting the converter scale them. This is exactly how teleconverters have always worked on traditional cameras: you pick a lens, you attach a multiplier, and you get a longer effective focal length with the same field‑of‑view characteristics — plus the usual tradeoffs in light, sharpness, and contrast.
Technical Specs
G‑Series Super Telephoto 240mm
2× teleconverter (Reeflex calls this “Optical Boost”) Works on iPhone 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max / 16 Pro / 16 Pro Max Multiplies the native 5× (120mm) telephoto 120mm × 2 = 240mm
G‑Series Super Telephoto 300–600mm
3× teleconverter Works on iPhone 17 Pro / 17 Pro Max Multiplies the native 4× (100mm) tetraprism Multiplies the native 8× (200mm) sensor‑crop telephoto mode 100mm × 3 = 300mm (48MP) 200mm × 3 = 600mm (12MP)
How to Actually Use This Lens Correctly
To get the full benefit of the Reeflex 300–600mm, you need a third‑party camera app that allows hard lens selection. Without that, you’re not controlling which native focal length the teleconverter is multiplying.
The native iPhone Camera app does not allow independent, explicit lens selection. It blends lenses, switches automatically, and makes computational decisions you cannot override. That means you cannot reliably force the phone to stay on 4× or 8× — which is essential for this lens.
A new version of the Reeflex app is a fantastic companion for this super‑telephoto. It gives you manual control, hard lens selection, and a shooting interface that respects the optical setup you’ve built.
It’s our last show of 2024 and just when you think there’s no news, Reeflex starts shipping their new 240 mm Super Telephoto lens. One of us has it and I wonder if any of the images from that lens will make their way into Our Recent Photos.

Went to Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh for the winter flower show. Taken in default camera app except for the waterfalls which were ReeHeld. And since we talked about editing on the last iphoneography show, I all edited in the photos app. @PhippsNews@iPhotoPodcast
