Some coaches build teams, while others build armies. Jürgen belongs to the latter category. He commands his fortress like a general, and his Spartans are ready to follow him into battle and die for him if he so much as lifts a finger. You can be a genius, but you won’t achieve anything if you can’t build a family bond within the group. An exceptional master of mentality

📌 Work on defensive cover and balance in midfield scenarios.

🧱Set-Up:

✔️ 30 by 20 playing space with a 5-yard central zone (grey) and 5-yard end zones (grey) bolted on at each end.

👕Teams: ⚫️’s vs 🔴’s plus 🟢

🧩 How to Play:

✔️⚫️’s start the attack by passing into 🟢.

✔️The 🟢 plays into any of the three ⚫️’s who entered the pitch. The ⚫️’s are closely marked by three 🔴’s.

✔️Initially, 1 of the 🔴’s is fixed to the central zone until their team wins the ball or the ⚫️’s break through the grey central zone.

✔️The ⚫️ scoring team must be in the grey-shaded zone to score.

✔️If the 🔴’s win the ball, they try to score from anywhere for 1 point or within the grey shaded zone (guarded by the 🟢) for 2 points.

🚧 Constraints:

🏆Reward: Double points if the ’s regain and score within a set time period. The 🔴’s would get 2 goals or 4 goals based on the scoring system above.

👨‍🏫 Review: Timing of the interceptions, the marking and covering from the 🔴’s.

🚫 Restriction: If the 🔴’s can trap the ball in the opponent’s half for 6 seconds, they get served a ball to attack with.

9V9 Course | Width of the CBs

In a back 3, the outside CBs can't be too wide.

If they are, they won't be able to play the 2v1 out wide, and they won't draw an opposing wide player into pressing one of our inside players, which is what creates a free player for us.

A great example of how FC Porto manipulate a 4-4-2 mid block to build play between lines. Rather than forcing play forward, Porto use patient circulation, close positioning between two pivots, and well timed movement to create uncertainty in Arouca's defensive references. The key lesson is simple. Move the opposition first, then exploit the space their movement creates.

The more I hear coaches say “we play our way,” the less I like it.

Fàbregas said after Como’s win over Napoli: “We can’t always play our way.” And this keeps coming up over and over again.

A few years ago, before he started coaching properly and while he was doing his badges, I interviewed Cesc and asked how he was preparing himself. He told me he was basically building a massive library of different game situations, different formations, different structures, trying to understand what problems different opponents might create and what solutions might be available.

So even before he had a team, he was thinking this way. Not “this is my formation and this is how my team will play,” but: what does this situation require?

I wrote about this recently with Arteta too. I think we mix up coaching philosophy, game idea, game model and playing style all the time.

Your coaching philosophy is probably the most stable part, your beliefs about football, learning, leadership, player autonomy, development, what you value. Your game idea gives you a broad direction. Your game model gives players shared principles for solving recurring problems. Your playing style is simply what actually shows up in the game.

The mistake is taking something from the bottom of that chain and pretending it belongs at the top.

“We always build short.”
“We never go long.”
“We always press high.”
“We always play through midfield.”

Those are not beliefs. They’re solutions.

And sometimes the solution is wrong.

Even last night in training we were playing 8v8 and one team was pressing ridiculously high. The team building out kept trying to play through the press. Over and over again.

But they didn’t need to.

The opposition had committed so many players forward that there was loads of space behind them. They were perfectly capable of skipping the press and finding somebody higher up the field, but they were so focused on “playing out” that they stopped seeing what the game was actually giving them.

This is exactly the problem.

We teach players a way of solving something, then eventually the solution becomes the objective.

Playing through the press becomes more important than progressing.

Keeping the ball becomes more important than attacking the space.

Pressing high becomes more important than recognizing whether pressing high is actually useful in that moment.

Then the opponent changes the problem and we keep using the same answer.

Fàbregas dropping into a low block late against Napoli doesn’t mean he suddenly believes in low-block football. It means the situation changed and Como adapted to it.

Your philosophy can stay fairly stable while almost everything underneath it changes.

If the opponent sends six players to press you, maybe skip them. If they sit deep, maybe you have to circulate and move them. If you’re protecting a lead late in the game, maybe you defend deeper than you normally would. If there’s 50 yards of space in front of you, maybe going backwards to “keep possession” makes absolutely no sense.

I think this is what a game model should actually help players with. Give them enough shared references to understand what we’re trying to achieve, but not so many fixed answers that they stop looking at the game.

Because at some point “staying true to our philosophy” can become a very convenient way of saying:

we’re going to keep doing the same thing even though the game is telling us not to.

The job of a coach.

“My job is to always be opposite at the moment.”

Calm when chaos comes.
Confident when doubt creeps in.
Demanding when standards slip.
Encouraging when confidence drops.
Patient when frustration grows.

Give your team what the moment needs.

[David Garcia @IJaSport]

If your players are too afraid to tell you that you’re getting something wrong, you probably haven’t developed leaders. You’ve developed really obedient followers.

Hürzeler talks here about his players basically telling him, "You're doing too much, we’re overcomplicating things, we’re getting away from what made us good."

The players felt comfortable enough to challenge him, and he was secure enough to hear it without treating it like some threat to his authority.

Surely that’s what you want too. Not players who just do exactly what the coach says, but players who can think, notice things, speak up and actually help shape the team.

The amount of times I’ve heard coaches say: “We just don’t have any goalscorers.” “We’re just not technical enough.” “They don’t read the game well enough.” “We don’t have the players.”

When I read Iraola saying that now the transfer window is closed it’s time “to develop what we have,” that was immediately where my mind went.

Because this applies even more at youth level, which is obviously the context I work in.

There are some huge clubs, especially in the US, where if they decide they need a better striker or a quicker centre-back or a more technical midfielder, they can probably go and find one. Kids will line up to play there. They’ll recruit the best players in the area and a lot of those players will come.

Most coaches don’t have that. You have the players you have. And quite frankly, endlessly complaining that they’re not good enough isn’t your job.

Your job is to help them get better.

If they’re not technical enough, how are you helping them become more technically capable?

If they don’t recognize situations quickly enough, how are you helping them learn what information to pay attention to?

If you “don’t have any goalscorers,” what are the actual problems around your team creating and finishing chances? What can you improve?

If your centre-back keeps getting exposed, maybe they really are too slow for what you’re asking them to do. But before deciding you need another centre-back, why are they constantly being asked to defend 30 yards of space? Can they recognize the moment earlier? Can their positioning improve? Can somebody else protect them differently? Can the team defend the situation better?

Not every problem can be coached away and not every player can become anything you want them to become. Obviously.

But if your explanation for every problem keeps coming back to "the players aren’t good enough", at some point you have to look at yourself too.

You need to get better at helping your players get better.

That’s coaching.

And I actually think this is one of the harder parts of youth coaching because it’s very easy to imagine what your team would look like with different players. Faster players, more technical players, smarter players, bigger players.

Cool. You don’t have them. So what can this group become? What can these players learn?

What can you change about the environment, the task, the information you give them, the way the team plays, the roles you ask them to perform?

Sometimes the player has to adapt to the role. Sometimes the role should adapt to the player. Sometimes the whole team can solve a problem that one individual can’t solve by themselves.

But you have to actually coach the people in front of you.

“Develop what we have” sounds incredibly obvious.

I’m not sure we act like it is nearly enough.

Yes, there is room for "generic drills."

They can give players lots of basic repetitions.

But when you're trying to solve an actual problem from the game...

You need to get more specific.

Here's a simple framework I use:

The 5 W's of Drill Design 🧵

[Osku Partonen @Coach_Osku]

2.
WHAT goes wrong?

Start with the actual problem.

Not:

"We need to work on passing."

Instead:

"We keep losing the ball when trying to play through midfield."

Now you have something specific to train.

Bien dice Juan Manuel Lillo que en escenarios así, el campo es más ancho que largo.

[Osku Partonen @Coach_Osku]

You have a Coaching Principle written in your plan.

Great.

But how do you get your players to actually demonstrate it on the pitch?

Here's the process I use:

🧵

[Lucas @lucas_hby]

How to rotate your Coaching Principles during the season:

Pick 2–3 principles.

Make them your main focus for 4–6 weeks.

Then rotate.

Here's a simple example:

9.
Don't try to coach everything at once.

Pick 2–3 principles.

Repeat them across different situations.

Give them 4–6 weeks.

Then shift the main focus while continuing to reinforce what came before.
