A quick economics lesson on the value of the government “creating jobs”:

— if the government just prints money and gives it to people (eg stimmy checks), that does not create value. It creates inflation.

— if the government hires people to dig holes and fill them back up, it’s the same as stimmy checks but with the illusion of employment.

— if the government hires people to make holes in other countries, it doesn’t create any value. In fact, it removes productive resources from our economy.

The only thing that creates prosperity is the creation of good and services that Americans actually want.

Some amount of defense spending is necessary but it should be seen as a cost not a benefit.

You’re Morally Obligated to Do Remarkable Things. Why?

Well, partly because life is so difficult and challenging that unless you give it everything you have, the chances are very high that it will embitter you. And then you'll be a force for darkness. That’s not good.

Also, the fact that life is short and can be brutal can terrify you into hiding. But you can flip that on its head and understand that since you're all in, you might as well take the adventurous risks. That's a very good thing to understand.

What is also useful to understand is that there isn't anything more adventurous than the truth. This is something that took me a long time to figure out. You can craft your words to get what you want.

if you're attempting to say what you believe to be true and attempting to act in the manner that you think is most appropriate, that's genuinely you. If you're trying to live in the truth, you have the force of reality behind you, and that seems like a good deal. You have the reality and the adventure.

So, why is that a moral obligation?

Well, if you hide and you don't let what's inside of you out—and you don't bring into the world what you could bring—you become cynical and bitter. Not only will you not add to the world what you could add, but you'll start being jealous of people who are competent and doing well and work to destroy them.

That's the pathway to hell.

MY ADVICE TO SPEAKER MIKE JOHSON:

Set the right expectations immediately.

The GOP doesn't have the Senate or the White House. It can't deliver all the policies we wish it could. So instead, focus on changing the process, rather than simply policy.

Announce that the new Congress will be working longer hours in Washington, instead of going into recess at every opportunity. Work weekends, like regular Americans have to when there's work to be done. Zero days off from now till 12/31.

We can't demand a win on every issue. So make your plans clear early. Announce in advance what issues you're ready to work with Democrats on, and which ones you are going to demand concessions on.

My recommendation: The most important issue is the border. It has to be fixed, or nothing else matters.

Announce that the House will be passing separate spending bills, instead of the same bloated continuing resolutions. Start with the least controversial, and work your way toward the stickier issues. Then follow through so that the left can't accuse Republicans of holding Social Security or veterans hostage as part of our negotiations on Ukraine or the border.

If we're honest about our plans, and follow through on them, the GOP will show that it is capable of governing, and it will be clear to the American people where they differ with the Democrats.

The first step toward reclaiming power is to show that you deserve it.
