@autismgadfly The Autism Science Foundation has proposed changes to #AutismCARES that would fix it. NCSA & VOR are actively lobbying for these changes. I went w VOR to DC to lobby for these changes.
@AltB56073878@Forbes The sad part is that legitimate help and access to alternative augmentative communication in HCBS (ie, the real stuff) is impossible to get despite laws that back up such access.
@AltB56073878@Forbes Scientific American called Bettelheim “a hero of our time” with his work on promoting the refrigerator mother theory as the cause of autism- so Forbes is following that great tradition of the media promoting false theories regarding autism.
@dansmcp Having autism raises victimhood in today’s woke culture. Victimhood is an advantage that brings enormous privilege, power., & attention. Those who really have autism are forgotten as this culture thrives.
@autismgadfly@autismspeaks They caved( just like ASA )to the ND . As far as I know, they haven’t endorsed changes to Autism CARES proposed by the Autism Science Foundation to include profound autism. NDs call them “terrorists.” And now they are separating themselves from the profound autism community.
@PatronStOfSleep "Hollywood autism" has to trivialize or minimize the disorder. Showing how autism can be, as pernicious as it mostly is, is not very entertaining. It's not even a good circus geek show for gawkers.
Another takeaway from #INSAR2024 is that the designation of "profound autism" is not just inevitable, it has already happened. Researchers have embraced it already and the work is apace. Those opposed have already lost, though remonstrations may continue. #autism
@JasonTraversPhD@disabilityscoop While I’m not a fan of FC, it’s not a bad idea to teach individuals to type to express words not presented on the communication board. I’m not ready to dismiss the study bc of the FC connection. They can be wrong on one thing and right on another.
@autismgadfly That’s to back up the lie that all individuals with autism are successful living in the community. The lie includes all individuals with autism being successful at working in competitive employment.
@ProfoundAutism My son was kicked out of preschool , but that was 33 years ago. He was also denied admission to the local public school at a time when the public school boasted “full inclusion״
@actualBabbitt @LansleyAnna Those who cannot speak for themselves need the people who love and care for them most to speak for them, not a self-appointed moral authority.
@autismgadfly I was a registered Democrat for over fifty years. I left the party last October. One of the reasons for leaving is the liberal one size fits all for autism/IDD philosophy.
@LansleyAnna My son is too speak for himself. The moral authorities won’t listen to the parents because we aren’t the ones with the disability. It’s a clever way to deny essential services to those who need them most.
