What if we had taken that Ship.

Seconds tick, minutes pass, Hours fly. Days merge into weeks and into months and into years.

The one place where life is fair is time. Everyone has 24 hours in a day and while you can buy someone’s time in exchange of salary, you can’t buy more time for yourself.

Trouble is there are many claimants of this time.

As a student while you are struggling with Calculus, your phone lights up with a Insta reel of some of your friends partying.

Then you marry, have kids and the demand on your time quadruples. Your work is demanding, parents are ageing. Financial concerns, juggling time for Kids PTA versus Office Meeting and Mom's Doctor appointment.

A solution to most of these problems is having more money, but the pursuit of money demands time and to succeed at anything you have to focus on it, at the exclusion of everything else. If you read about the lives of great people across time, you will notice one thing most common. Their family paid a price for their greatness.

While speaking to our office night security guard, I realised that the man begins his day washing cars, works in factory in the day and has a night shift as a guard. From a village near Raipur, he is an absentee on all Birthdays and Anniversaries back home. All this to just provide for his family. Whats in his tiffin? I ask. Roti with Salted Onions and Aachar is in his tiffin today. Most pay with their dreams the price of just staying alive.

Life is hard. Harder on the poor. The presence of money accounts for an absence of a lot of problems.

In between all this struggle, time is like a river flowing and before you realise you are forty and you look back and wonder what happened to your dreams? This is not how it was supposed to be, was it?

I was sitting with Dad on his favourite swing on his 80th Birthday. I asked him when he looks back at life, does he have questions? In his final year of Bsc, his friends came home and said they are leaving tonight for Mumbai to get on to a ship that will take them to the US. They asked him to join. Those days, US gave citizenship to whoever just landed there. Dad said, “Wonder how life would have turned out if I had taken that ship”.

Thats our life. As Shakespeare said, “A tale told by an Idiot. Full of sounds and fury, signifying nothing”. A series of Ships we took and didn’t and no way to know where the other ship could have taken us.

We need to slow down time to enjoy life.

The magic of slowing down time is attention. Being present in every moment. We are either sleeping or sleepwalking through life. Buddha calls it Mindfulness. Being aware of your breathing, sounds of birds, taste of each morsel, the texture of a leaf. If every word and every action is done mindfully, you will feel the clock slow down.

Time passes by anyway. We can watch a movie, read a book, go for a walk. Life is in these micro choices. In our routines and habits. Mindfulness is the key to happiness.

Irrationally Yours,

As a banker I have seen customers with crores in account revolve credit cards paying obscene interest! Banking makes money out of inefficiency. Their customers as well as their own.

Over Rs. 2 trillion is stuck as unclaimed money post customer's death because no nominee! SEBI says even after threatening to make accounts inoperative two-thirds of demat accounts do not have a nominee.

Observe your own spending and investing patterns - you may find irrationality.

We wont forgive if someone runs away with our money but its ok if he wastes our time - the only irreplaceable resource we have!

It's good to look back at all the so called decisions we made. Haven’t we subsequently come up with the rationale? All Autobiographies are lies, for in our head we re-write our story depending on how the outcomes have turned out. If it ends in riches, we glamorise even the rags we were in earlier.

If you rewind to that exact period of life when you made the choice, you may conclude that you did not make the choice, the choice made you!

We make choices based on

1. Default. Engineering and MBA are default choices. Be honest did you choose your education or you took the path of least resistance and went with the flow?

2. Loss Aversion. Certain loss for an uncertain gain looks like a bad trade off in our head. People will hold on to loss making investments, toxic relationship, an unhappy job, for strangely a known devil is comforting versus an unknown angel. Toxic hope. J Krishnamurthy says,”One is never afraid of the unknown. One is afraid of the known coming to an end”.

3. Inertia. Newton never meant it to apply to humans but it does. Humans will complain, want change but are scared of change! Status quo is strangely comforting even as it may be inconvenient.

Behavioural Economists and Marketeers know it. Food makers, alcohol and tobacco makers know it and so do car companies and Luxury brands. Where are the worlds cheapest five star hotels? Las Vegas of course! They know if you give people near free rooms they will stay and lose a whole lot more gambling away crazy odds in the hope of a jackpot.

In a party, a childhood friend, now a Top Surgeon was recounting how medicine was his calling from childhood. I know he took medicine following a girl he was smitten! She left studies, got married to someone else and today our man is shining in a path she chose!

Fun part is if the girl had gone into engineering, he would have been rationalising that!

Fact is life just happens. Accidentally and Circumstantially. Humans like to believe we are intelligent, rational beings in control of our choices. Facts do not support this fallacy.

I read a funny quote somewhere. 'Fries or Salad? Sums up every adult decision we have to make’.

I know I should be eating salad but its almost weekend so make mine Double Cheese Pizza, large Fries but since am watching my weight, Diet Coke please.

The goodbyes we never say.

There are people we lose to death.

A rich merchant invited Master Sengai to bless the new home he had built. The master took brush and ink, and wrote:

Grandfather dies 
Father dies 
Son dies

The merchant was angry. The Master explained " I wish that every man of your family shall live to be a grandfather. And I wish that no son may die before his father. Death is inevitable but can you imagine the pain if this order is broken?”

Through life we say goodbyes.

And then there are people we lose to life.

Have you thought about people we had cared about that we just drifted away from?

In a fast flowing mountain stream a piece of driftwood gets stuck behind a rock, another piece of wood also gets lodged there and both keep bobbing up until a current dislodges them.

That’s our relationship with friends growing up. We move a city, a job, get married and our world changes.

There are those who are integral part of our life at some stage and then slowly without intending to, we never see them again. In busyness, priorities and practicalities we lose touch and drift away.

They say there are three kinds of friends. Friends for a season, friends for a reason and friends for a lifetime.

Most friends enter our life through the phase of life we are in. We have gym friends, kids parents friends, work friends etc. They drop off when either season or reason changes.

Making your space in the world is not easy and in the struggle we lose the time and inclination to hold on to friends from a different stage in life. Work, spouse, children demand a lot of time and then it’s about prioritising. After marriage your friend has to meet spousal approval too.

Then there are those treasures. Friends for life! Those without season or reason. Where frequency matches. Those that will make silly jokes on your predicament but feel your pain as their own. In our life if we are able to find even one such soul we are blessed.

You may have an aunt that doted on you when you were a kid, an Uncle who supported you. We are all creepers that climb on support of others. Parents, relatives, friends, teachers, a boss. In the busyness of life, we tend to become selfish and only think about our journey. In that we have to be conscious and create space for gratitude and payback. Sometimes it may be financial, most times it may be in terms of our time and acknowledgement.

In our journey through life, it may be good to pause and reflect. Of the unsaid goodbyes are there a few regretted ones that while life remains we can still reach out and pick up the threads. Estrangements with parents, sibling, friends hurt at a very deep level.

It may be worth revisiting the people we have lost to life. Every loss we can attempt to rectify before death- theirs our ours, makes the goodbye permanent.

The longer we live, the more goodbyes we will say. Those that we lose through death are inevitable but those we lose to life are rectifiable.

.@ncbn is fabricating stories to cover up the failures of his 100-day governance. He is making baseless allegations, claiming that animal fat is being used in place of ghee for the Srivari Laddu prasadam. Is it appropriate for a Chief Minister to make such statements? Is it justifiable to hurt the sentiments of millions of devotees?

The procurement process for laddu ingredients has remained consistent for decades. Every tanker of ghee must have an NABL certificate. After that, TTD collects three samples and conducts tests. Only if all the tests are passed, the ingredients are used for prasadam. If any test fails, the tanker is rejected. This system has been in place for decades.

From 2014 to 2019, around 14 to 15 tankers of ghee were rejected. During our tenure, we rejected 18 tankers. Instead of acknowledging that TTD has such a robust system, Chandrababu is spreading falsehoods. Samples were taken on July 12, when Chandrababu was still the Chief Minister. After three tests, the samples were sent to NDDB on July 17. If the ghee was rejected two months ago, what has Chandrababu been doing since then?

Chandrababu is degrading the sanctity of Lord Venkateswara in Tirumala. Even though no mistake has occurred, he is tarnishing TTD's reputation. We will write to the Chief Justice of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding this matter. Despite no mistakes being made, the national media is portraying it as though something went wrong. TTD has an exceptional system in place, and this should be highlighted with pride. After YSRCP came to power, we initiated the "Navaneetha Seva" in Tirumala. To support this, we established a cowshed (gosala) in Tirumala. It was also during our tenure that dilapidated temples were restored. TTD temples were constructed in Hyderabad, Chennai, Jammu & Kashmir, and Bhubaneswar. During our term, TTD also assisted in the construction of a temple in the United States.
