On 24 November, a woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by an Uber driver during a ride in Mowbray, Cape Town. According to reports, the driver deviated from her intended destination and instead drove to a secluded area. He then allegedly locked the car doors, preventing the woman from leaving, and took her phone, adding his own number to it.

The driver reportedly proceeded to sexually assault her, touching her thighs and breasts and attempting to rape her. After escaping the situation, the woman reported the incident to Uber and the police, providing video evidence to support her claims. However, she has since expressed frustration with the limited action and support she has received from both Uber and law enforcement authorities.

The alarming number of incidents involving Uber in recent weeks is deeply concerning, and we have had enough. What’s worse is the company’s apparent silence, with no public comment, no proactive outreach, and no visible effort to take accountability for the safety of its riders. As we observe 16 Days of Activism - a critical time to spotlight the fight against gender-based violence - the e-hailing industry demonstrates a glaring lack of urgency in aligning with these efforts or prioritising rider safety.

Rudzani Phophi, 27, was brutally attacked and set alight in Makhado Biaba, Limpopo, on 19 September 2024. After weeks of fighting for her life, Rudzani succumbed to her severe injuries in Mankweng Hospital. The brutal attack occurred as Rudzani was returning home from work, and it is alleged that two men ambushed her, striking her with a brick, dousing her with a flammable substance, and setting her alight.

Two men, aged 17 and 20, were arrested in connection with the murder and remain in custody as investigations continu. Rudzani leaves behind her child. Siphesihle Precious Twala, 26, was shot to death in Geluksdal, Brakpan, on 31 October 2024. It is alleged that Siphesihle was sitting in the passenger seat of a car, breastfeeding her child, when an unknown man approached the vehicle and shot her four times in the head. The suspect fled the scene, and no arrests have been made yet.

Gomolemo Mavimbela, 9, was killed in a hit-and-run incident while travelling to school on 30 October 2024. It is alleged that while Gomolemo’s mother was driving her daughter and her neighbour, 13, to school, a vehicle appeared from the opposite direction, jumped over the barrier, and crashed into them head-on. Gomolemo died at the scene while her mother and the boy were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, Shaune Mogaila, 29, is alleged to have crashed his vehicle into their vehicle and then fled the scene. He handed himself over to the police and appeared before the Tembisa Magistrates Court, facing charges of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving, and fleeing the scene of a crime. Shaune has been granted R20,000 bail, and the case was postponed until 4 February 2024. He is a football player at Sekhukhune United FC. “I am a 16-year-old girl, and a Bolt driver sexually assaulted me while I took a ride home from church. Not long after we began the trip, the driver started making comments that made me uncomfortable. I told him I didn’t want to talk about those things, hoping he would stop, but he didn’t listen. As we approached my house, he started touching my face and inner thighs. I was scared and told him repeatedly to stop touching me, but he did not care. Instead, he offered me ice cream, which I declined. Once I got home, I told my father what had happened, and together, we went to the police station, where I opened a case of sexual assault.
