I had time today, so I wanted to hop in on the NL ROTY debate between JJ and Sal.

I pulled their stats from each month to show the ebbs and flows of the season. The stats I pulled were Hits, HR, RBI, AVG, OBP, SLG, and OPS. In the last chart I put the differential on each stat in the “()” next to each name. I think these are all viable stats and truly show the offensive makeup of both players.

Sal has been great at hitting bombs and driving in runs, there is simply no denying that. While JJ has done what a leadoff batter should do, get on base however you can while providing some pop of his own. Their spots in the batting order play a big role in the stats they put up, but they’re in that spot for a reason. Sal is a bigger body that is built to drive the ball, while JJ has better speed and sprays the ball to all parts of the field.

They both have aspects of the game that they dominate the other in and some that they linger very close on. In comparison, they’re both very good offensive players, but they impact the game in two completely different ways. The big difference is on the defensive side. If you say that defense isn’t that important or it doesn’t matter, you simply don’t know ball.

Sal is having a remarkable offensive season for a rookie and his power is simply undeniable, but is simply mediocre on defense. JJ has been slumping at the plate as of late, but has overall been a great leadoff hitter. His glove separates him from others. So much that he’s having one of the best defensive seasons by a second baseman EVER as a rookie.

I won’t sit here and deny that Sal is a good player, I have great respect for him and his bat. As a Cardinals fan I’m not very excited to face him the Central for years to come, but I can respect a good ball player. I know this seems bias, but as long as JJ gets out of this slump, I think he’s the clear NL ROTY.

@gatewaygrinders This has to be a good haul to trade in the division. Brewers have the best farm in the league, so I’d say there’s a great chance at a good return.
