School drop-off every morning is like the Squid Game—every day fewer & fewer people & whoever is left gets herded into the cafeteria to play Russian roulette over lunch.
The many quarantining students & teachers today were joined by our principal himself who tested + ☹️
A parent coordinator at Townsend Harris high school just made this. She is wonderful. Why can't @nycschools do this? You can print this out, distribute to families and they can hang it up on the wall at home. Easy. It's just less confusing. @Realdavidcbanks Maybe yes?
Wallowing in COVID? Adults traumatizing children? How insensitive is that to the 1,697,200 NYC residents who contracted COVID or the 35,514 that died from it. @NYCMayor We don’t need swagger right now. We need policies that keep our children, families, & communities safe.
Tomorrow as we approach the surge peak of #Covid_19 across NYS, many municipalities— incl'g NYC—will have schools coming back from holidays fully open with NO testing requirements & with only the availability to test a fraction of students.
This is compounded unnecessary risk.
Hundreds of kids, most of whom are not or cannot be vaccinated, were hospitalized for COVID this week during the NYC schools break. What do you think will happen when @NYCSchools reopen on Monday, @NYCMayor?
Update: 139 just added for today. How many pediatric beds do we have, @NYCHealthCommr? Pull the breaks, @NYCMayor. This will only get worse when our children return to school in-person. Whatever @DrJayVarma and @NYCHealthCommr told you about Delta and before Delta isn't OMICRON!
I agree - schools should be the last place to go virtual. But we are marching into thousands of classroom superspreader events next week @NYCSchools -> with inevitable staffing problems, similar to hospitals. One week of remote learning is do-able and much safer for all NYers.
@Mssarahmssarah I am also keeping my kids home for at least the first week. I have two younger ones at home who are not eligible for vaccine yet. The risk is just too much.
⚠️Totally “mild”—US pediatric #COVID19 hospitalizations nearly 2x last year’s all-time high. Kids shouldn’t be hospitalized—kids shouldn’t be getting #LongCovid. Kids have their whole lives ahead of them. Let’s protect the kids. 🙏

An immediate reopening is reckless. We cannot start this return to school as it has been done in a failing way before. We need a #remotelearning option. There is no ifs, ands or buts about it.
Our children are not test subjects and will not be used to maintain a lie of safety!
Had the system announced a pivot to remote, staff and families could have had an actual break instead of worrying and trying to be heard by @NYCMayor. If you value self-care, make the pivot know, spell out the plan and let everyone take a breath.
