An update now that we’ve had time to investigate:

Hackers, most likely in Israel, launched a Distributed Denial of Service Attack on LaunchGood that sent over 1 billion requests to our website from bots to try and crash our servers (normally we only have a few thousand visitors on at once). We have tools similar to Cloudflare to prevent these attacks but they were able to find some weak points that we addressed within 5 minutes and got the site back to 95% uptime (now 100% alhamdulillah)

This resulted in about $300k in lost donations, primarily for humanitarian aid for Gaza 😞 (and about $50k to LaunchGood for extra servers, dev time, lost tips etc)

Nor were we the only target: another muslim crowdfunding site was hacked over the weekend by bad actors in Israel and India (changing their campaign images to Simpsons) and at least one charity website taken down as well.

We expect this only to increase.

But we are ready to fight.
