On July 27, 1919, 17-year-old Eugene Williams and his friends decided to seek relief from the blistering Chicago heat along the shores of Lake Michigan.

The lake was segregated by an invisible line.

They inadvertently drifted across the line that divided the waters by race.

This pissed off George Stauber, a twenty-four-year-old white man who decided to throw rocks at the boys. A rock hit Williams in the head, he fell off the raft and drowned.

The police refused to take Stauber into custody. The failure to arrest Williams’s killer was the immediate spark of the Chicago Race Riot of 1919.

Williams was buried in an unmarked grave in what was an all-Black Lincoln Cemetery in Blue Island because Black people back then were not allowed to be buried in city limits.

In 2018, a monument finally was unveiled at the gravesite with the help of local historian Tammy Gibson. #BlackHistoryWithLana #FreshVoicesRise
