The officer who was in command of the soldiers who opened fire on unarmed protestors in Dhaka's Mohammadpur area on 20th July 2024, has been identified.

BA 7516 Major Md. Noman Al Faruq, Second in Command (2IC) of the 23rd East Bengal Regiment (under the 46th Independent Infantry Brigade), was responsible for the group of soldiers.

Although the order to shoot was given by the magistrate present, as the senior-most officer present, Major Noman also bears responsibility.

While most army officers have expressed their unwillingness to fire on civilians, a few officers have become desperate to gain favor from the regime.

For those of us that have followed #Bangladesh and the #BrutalRegime of #SheikhHasina and #AwamiLeague the last few days is truly tragic but entirely predictable. The #InternationalCommunity has allowed this to happen. Who will now answer for it and where? It is now time @KarimKhanQC @IntlCrimCourt to act and stop this from becoming another statistic of brutality. This, unlike others, can be and should be stopped.

Over 100 Dead in Bangladesh Student Protests Over Government Job Quotas

More than 100 people have died during student protests in Bangladesh, as demonstrators demand the abolition of quotas for government jobs. With the country facing a high youth unemployment rate, students are calling for an end to the policy that reserves 30% of government jobs for relatives of veterans from Bangladesh’s 1971 War of Independence.

The protests, now in their fifth day, have prompted authorities to impose a curfew and restrict internet access since Friday. The government plans to involve the army to suppress the unrest.

In the town of Narsingdi, protesters stormed a prison, freeing inmates and setting the building on fire. Numerous government buildings have also been destroyed by demonstrators.

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), which cites hospital data, 105 people have been killed and over a thousand injured during the protests. Security forces are using tear gas and live ammunition to disperse the demonstrators, resulting in injuries to 300 police officers.

BREAKING: Violent protests RAGE ON in Bangladesh.

A nationwide INTERNET SHUTDOWN has been implemented as protesters DEMAND the end of government job quotas that favor members of PM Hasina's party the Awami League.

[Amnesty International South Asia, Regional Office @amnestysasia]

BANGLADESH 🇧🇩: @amnesty has analysed and authenticated witness testimonies, video and photographic evidence which confirms that the police used unlawful force against student protesters.

Further witness testimonies confirm the continuation of a multi-year pattern of violence against protesters, allegedly committed by members of the Bangladesh Chatra League (BCL), a group affiliated with the ruling party.

Our analysis finds that the shooting of student protestor Abu Sayed in Rangpur, was a seemingly intentional, unprovoked attack on an individual posing no threat to police officers, using ammunition designed for hunting which is extremely dangerous and unlawful for use in the policing of protests.

"We urgently call on the Government of Bangladesh to rehabilitate all those injured and ensure they receive proper medical treatment. The authorities must also ensure that all those engaged in the attacks on peaceful protesters are held to account, and that an impartial, independent, and swift investigation is conducted against these attackers as well as the police officers who have directly perpetrated or failed to prevent such breaches of the law" said Taqbir Huda, Regional Researcher for South Asia at Amnesty International.
