On the Greek island of Syros, animal lovers can live for free in exchange for caring for the island’s many stray cats.
The nonprofit organization Syros Cats runs a popular volunteer program that offers free accommodation, utilities, and sometimes meals. In return, volunteers help care for the island’s estimated 3,000 stray cats by feeding them, cleaning shelters, socializing the animals, and assisting with sterilization and veterinary care.
Volunteers typically stay in a shared house near the Aegean Sea, with private bedrooms, and commit several hours a day to cat care. The rest of their time is free to explore the charming capital of Ermoupoli, beautiful beaches, and picturesque villages.
This unique program has become a dream opportunity for cat enthusiasts around the world, allowing them to enjoy authentic Greek island life while making a real difference for the local feline population.

In 1933, archaeologists lifted a stone box from a corner of the Apadana at Persepolis. Inside lay two tablets, one gold and one silver, buried around 515 BC and untouched since. Darius the Great had written down the size of his empire and asked Ahuramazda to protect his house.

Declassified 2000 Arctic Region Map Created By The CIA
This 2000 CIA Arctic Region map depicts the strategic geography of the Arctic Region at the beginning of the twenty-first century, emphasizing climate boundaries, sea ice extent, and the proximity of the world’s major Arctic powers.
Centered on the North Pole using an azimuthal equal-area projection, the map highlights the interconnected northern territories of the United States, Canada, Russia, Greenland, and the Nordic countries while illustrating the Arctic Ocean as a shared geopolitical space rather than a distant frontier.
A defining feature of the map is the red 10°C July isotherm, commonly used to delineate the Arctic region climatologically.
The map also marks the average minimum extent of sea ice, emphasizing how climate conditions shape navigation, settlement, and resource access.
Major Arctic settlements, ports, islands, and maritime zones are identified, including strategic chokepoints such as the Bering Strait and northern sea routes along the Russian coast.
Created in 2000, the map emerged during a transitional period in Arctic geopolitics.
Following the end of the Cold War, military tensions in the High North had eased, but new strategic concerns were developing around climate change, energy resources, and emerging shipping lanes.
Russia was rebuilding its Arctic posture after the collapse of the Soviet Union, while the United States, Canada, and Nordic states increasingly focused on sovereignty claims, environmental monitoring, and scientific cooperation.
At the same time, declining sea ice projections were beginning to transform the Arctic from a remote military frontier into a region of growing economic and geopolitical importance.
Today, the map remains highly relevant because many of the issues it foreshadowed now define global Arctic politics.
Melting sea ice has intensified competition over shipping routes, fisheries, hydrocarbons, and territorial claims. The Arctic has also re-emerged as a zone of strategic rivalry between Russia and NATO members.
This map captures an important historical moment just before the Arctic became central to twenty-first-century discussions about climate change, energy security, and great-power competition.

A Japanese company hired 11 full-time office cats to reduce workplace stress, and it’s working.
Tokyo-based Qnote Inc. first adopted a cat in 2004 and has since grown its feline staff to 11 permanent office residents. Employees say the cats boost morale, encourage short breaks, and create a much more relaxed and pleasant work environment.
Each cat even has an official job title, such as “office clerk,” “manager,” or “auditor”, making them fully integrated into the company culture. The company loves cats so much that “cat lover” is now listed as a requirement for human job applicants.
To accommodate its furry employees, Qnote renovated the office with 12 cat toilets, climbing shelves, and scratch-resistant walls, allowing the cats to roam freely without causing damage. The result? Lower stress levels and stronger team bonding among staff.
A purr-fect workplace solution.
Pastry Rolls with Lemon Cream Filling
Servings: 8 pastry rolls Prep: 20 minutes (plus chill) Bake: 18–22 minutes
Ingredients
Pastry
1 box (14–16 oz) frozen puff pastry, thawed in fridge (2 sheets)
1 egg + 1 tsp water (egg wash)
Powdered sugar, for dusting
Lemon cream filling
8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, room temp
1/2 cup (120 ml) heavy cream, cold
1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
1/3 cup (80 ml) fresh lemon juice (about 2 lemons)
1 tbsp finely grated lemon zest
1 tsp vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
Optional whipped topping
1/2 cup (120 ml) heavy cream
1 tbsp powdered sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
Instructions
Make the lemon cream
In a bowl, beat cream cheese until perfectly smooth (1–2 min).
Add sugar, lemon zest, vanilla, and salt; beat until combined.
With mixer running, slowly stream in lemon juice; beat until silky and slightly thick.
In a separate chilled bowl, whip 1/2 cup heavy cream to soft‑medium peaks; fold into lemon mixture.
Cover and chill 30 minutes (firms up for piping).
Prep and bake the pastry
Heat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line 2 baking sheets with parchment.
Unfold puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Roll each sheet to about 10×12 inches.
Cut each sheet into 4 rectangles (total 8).
Starting from a short edge, roll each rectangle into a tight log (or wrap each around a lightly greased metal cream‑horn mold if you have them). Place seam‑side down on sheets, spacing apart.
Brush lightly with egg wash.
Bake 18–22 minutes until very puffed and deep golden. Cool completely on a rack.
Fill
If you baked without molds, use a small serrated knife to hollow a tunnel through each roll from one end (or split lengthwise, leaving a hinge).
Spoon lemon cream into a piping bag with a round tip (or a zip bag with the corner snipped). Pipe generously into each pastry until filled.
Finish
Dust with powdered sugar. Pipe small swirls of lightly sweetened whipped cream on top (whip the optional topping ingredients to medium peaks). Serve chilled or at cool room temperature.
Tips
Ultra‑crisp layers: bake pastries fully golden; underbaked puff softens fast.
Make‑ahead: bake shells up to 1 day ahead; store airtight once cool. Fill within 2–3 hours of serving for best crunch.
Extra lemony: fold 2–3 tbsp lemon curd into the cream (reduce sugar slightly).
Variations: swap lemon for lime or orange; add blueberries/raspberries inside before piping.
The Atacama Giant in Chile is the world's largest prehistoric human geoglyph, built around 1000–1400 AD. The 119m desert figure likely served as an astronomical calendar to track seasons, crops, and rainfall, and is culturally linked to the Andean creator deity Tunupa-Tarapaca.
Carved into the slopes of Cerro Unitas in Chile's Atacama Desert, the Atacama Giant stands approximately 119m tall, making it the largest known prehistoric anthropomorphic geoglyph in the world. Archaeologists believe it was created by indigenous Andean peoples between 1000-1400 AD, during a period when extensive trade networks connected communities across the Andes and Pacific coast.
Unlike Peru's Nazca Lines, which are famous for their geometric and animal designs, the Atacama Giant is thought to have had a practical as well as spiritual function. Some researchers propose that the figure's distinctive head ornaments and alignments may have been used to track the position of the moon and seasonal cycles, helping communities predict rainfall and determine the best times for planting and travel across one of the driest regions on Earth.
The geoglyph remains one of more than 5,000 known prehistoric earthworks discovered throughout the Atacama Desert, making the region one of the world's richest concentrations of ancient landscape art.
The Atacama Desert's extreme aridity, some areas receive less than 1 millimeter of rain annually, has preserved many geoglyphs for over a thousand years with remarkably little erosion.

@Rainmaker1973 This is no surprise but “equals” might be a stretch. I think they think they are smarter than us. And they definitely think we are annoying.
A research into cat behavior shows that domestic cats regard humans as social peers rather than superiors, often perceiving their owners as large, awkward kittens.
Far from being aloof or defiant, a cat’s apparent indifference stems from a profound interspecies mismatch in social expectations.
As anthrozoologist John Bradshaw explains, cats—unlike dogs—never evolved to recognize humans as dominant leaders or authority figures. Instead, they filter all interactions through an exclusively feline framework. Behaviors like kneading on your lap or licking your hair are not mere displays of affection; they are the same grooming and bonding rituals cats reserve for close kin or pride members. In their eyes, we are simply enormous, somewhat clumsy fellow cats who require inclusion in the group.
This absence of hierarchical deference accounts for cats’ frequent disregard of commands or household rules. Treating us as equals, they follow cat-to-cat social protocols in every encounter. The “gifts” of dead prey on the doorstep or constant shadowing around the home are acts of care toward what they see as a big, furless, rather inept companion.
Recognizing this mindset transforms the human-cat relationship from one based on authority and obedience to one of mutual companionship. It turns out that while many owners believe they have domesticated their cats, the cats themselves are quietly convinced they are patiently tending to their oversized, adopted family members.

NEWS: The Department of Justice has released security camera footage showing Cole Tomas Allen, the suspect in the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting, firing at a U.S. Secret Service agent during an attempted ass*ssination of President Trump last Saturday.
The footage also shows him casing the Washington Hilton the day before the attack.
