Advice to Upcoming Aides

When you work for principals, maintain respect, responsibility and trust when you leave them for whatever reasons.

I can advise because I have worked with many principals I have course to disagree on many issues, from Gani Fawehinmi, Olisa Agbakoba, Ken Nnamani, Ojo Maduekwe, President Jonathan, etc.

Never once did I say anything wrong about them when I left. They continue to love and respect me till date.

Gani wrote me a reference to Harvard and described me as the smartest and most honest person he has met, despite that I left his office in some controversy. Until his death, Gani continued to give me complimentary copies of his Nigerian weekly law report.

Ojo Maduekwe continued to consult me for official work (even taking me along for President Yaradua’s state visit to the US as official adviser despite that I resigned as SA on ground of disagreement. I never speak ill of him. When I left him, I went back with 5 pastors to apologise for leaving him and assure him I would continue to look out for his best interest.

Till date, I am Ken Nnamani’s PA even as I disagreeded with his membership of APC. As NERC chairman, I was still writing speeches for my oga. Oga is Oga, whether I leave his service or not. Loyalty and trust should count for something.

I cannot talk about GEJ. He is oga for life. He continues to like and respect me. And I never speak ill of him, even as I can hold critical views of his governance.

If you quarrel with your principals and you cannot restrain from abusing them, do not praise yourself, rather mourn for yourself and pray for healing.

You are not smart or courageous. You are plain foolish. And you can change. Take this as a friendly advice.

Debunking the Phantom Debts and Ecological Loan Fallacy

My attention has been drawn to trending claims by the Anambra State Government that my administration left behind inherited debts, including a ₦2 billion ecological loan, contractor liabilities, and unpaid salaries, gratuities, and pensions. This is completely false.

We systematically liquidated historical gratuities and arrears dating back several years, amounting to over ₦35 billion. At the point of handover, the state owed nothing in salaries, gratuities, or pensions, nor did we owe anything to any contractor for projects duly executed and certified.

The ₦2 billion ecological fund in question was released barely three months before the end of my tenure for the Oko/Umuchiana erosion crisis. Despite pressure to spend the money, I refused, insisting that it should be left for my successor because government is a continuum and the funds were tied to a specific project.

The money was therefore left 100 per cent intact in First Bank, in Account No. 2018779464, with a balance of over ₦2.13 billion.

It is important to stress that funds tied to specific projects or set aside for particular purposes were not even included in the over ₦75 billion in savings we left behind.

If anybody can establish anything to the contrary, I will stop campaigning. -PO

I am deeply disturbed by the attack on the convoy of our presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as he travelled to Benue State.

The deliberate mobilisation of unruly elements to block and attack his convoy and prevent him from entering Makurdi marks another dark day for our democracy.

Authorities must remember that the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to freedom of movement. This right applies even more strongly to Mr Obi, a former governor and leading opposition figure.

The Benue State Government must, as a matter of urgency, ensure that those responsible are swiftly identified and prosecuted. It must also guarantee the safety and free movement of our candidate and his entourage.

I further urge the President to caution state governors, particularly those in his party against any actions that could undermine the sanctity of our democracy.

I also call on the international community, including diplomatic missions and election observation groups, to take note of this incident and to urge Nigerian authorities to uphold the rule of law, protect opposition leaders, and safeguard democratic freedoms. - RMK
