@Gaismair I’m in France right now, have had TV news on in the background all night, and haven’t heard a single word about it!
Only thing they’ve been talking about for hours is Marine Le Pen.
@ArmandDoma There’s also a contingent of guys who got leftist politics in college and have trouble squaring it with their middle class upbringing (and current corporate job), so they become obsessed with/LARP the dirtbag aesthetic to distance themselves from their normie lib counterparts.
I teach college and here's the thing:
Writing is a materialized form of thinking. It is not just a way to record thoughts. It is a concrete route to understanding.
If one uses a machine to write, they cease thinking. They abandon a route to understanding. Not good!
Why did leftists decide that manifestly low conscientiousness is a mark of "authenticity"? They did it with Fetterman, it blew up in their face, and now they've done it again with Platner: falling in love with an obviously unreliable underemployed weirdo. https://t.co/cid5VoEtsW
English is full of “lexical gaps”: words that are implied to exist but don’t, because we borrowed a bunch of words from Latin but not other, related words↓
As Putnam pointed out in Bowling Alone, the kinds of third places that are actually declining are the ones that form thick attachments -- churches, fraternal clubs, bowling leagues, local political groups, unions, etc.
But discourse about third place decline centers on the consumer economy, because people want there to be someone to blame (greedy capitalists tearing out the coffee shop seating, neoliberal austerity minded governments closing the libraries) rather than their own behavior.
Much easier to blame the man for your problems than to put down the phone and go out and form community with like-minded people.
Fare enforcement is one of the things I’ve completely changed my mind on. I used to take the compassionate stance and think it doesn’t hurt to give someone down on their luck a pass.
But this is further proof that it’s more a small minority of people with deeply antisocial behaviour.
We can’t let our public spaces devolve such that the average person doesn’t want to use them.
