Rugby league legend Sir Billy Boston has died aged 92.
Born in Cardiff in 1934, he would go on to score 24 tries in 31 appearances for Great Britain and was part of the side that won the 1960 World Cup.
@powell_dan69548@SamJRushworth@dmnqwk Exactly! And the suits in Whitehall are scratching their heads wondering why UK productivity has declined compared with the rest of the G7. The Laffer curve is real!
@SamJRushworth@dmnqwk 9% (plus 6% postgrad loan), on top of tax and tapering benefits, makes people think twice about taking on the responsibility that comes with promo/pay rises. Like it or not, swathes of exp 30-something yr olds are now opting for 3/4-day weeks because the system incentivises it.
@SamJRushworth Not silly. Higher rate tax
40% income tax
2% NI
9% student loan
6% postgraduate loan
Then you lose Child Benefit for 2/3 children over £60k.
Suddenly, very little is left from each extra £1 earned. So why take on all that extra responsibility for so little extra take-home pay?

Britain has produced a generation of thirty-year-olds who can't afford to move out, can't afford to have children, can't afford to get ill, and can't afford to stop.
They did everything they were told. School, university, the debt, the graduate scheme, the promotion that came with more responsibility and £200 a month.
The reward is a life where every month is spoken for before it starts, with nothing left over to build anything that might eventually get them out.
A million people didn't independently fail. This is what a decade of flat wages against climbing costs actually looks like.
@AaronBower Six figures on the pitch, LEDs and a screen? Bold of Bradford to turn ‘great nick’ into the new gold standard for ‘bare minimum to scrape IMG points’. Eyes of Super League indeed… mostly rolling ofc!
@JoshB1406@CamDonDuncan Salford were already fucked off no need to “fuck ’em off.” Redirect that anger to Bradford instead who have had too much RFL Money!
@BBCNewsnight If you took a postgraduate loan you pay another 6% on top of the 9% undergraduate loan.
That means 15% of your salary goes on student loan repayments alone.

@MartinSLewis 15% student loan repayments punish aspiration.
Should Postgrad loans should be rolled into Plan 1/2 at 9%?
The current system can discourage promotions and progression, esp if a higher rate tax payer
