@StopAflatoxin I'm not sure. Crop diversification would reduce the risk of a bad harvest, but not necessarily price seasonality. Prices of non-maize commodities face similar seasonal pressures as maize does (minus the political ones perhaps).

@StopAflatoxin They would definitely help. Of course delivering good credit service to smallholders is not easy. It's hard to recover fixed costs from small loans.
@StopAflatoxin The trouble is that when rains are favorable, no other crop currently produces as many calories per hectare as maize does in Malawi. With farm sizes that can barely feed a family, maize is the rational choice for many smallholders, even if an increasingly risky one.
