Kinda torn on this. I don’t think a night shift as a med student is necessary to learn how to practice medicine. However, I think it can be helpful as a way to foster compassion for your fellow physicians. Seeing the chief surgery resident fall asleep mid procedure note after operating all night left an impression on me. Maybe it’s a good idea to show a med student going into internal medicine or emergency med what surgery residents are dealing with and vice versa.

That doesn’t mean a student has to work more than 14 straight hours. How about a night shift surrounded by days off? We need to understand each other’s work lives a little better, so we can be nicer, more understanding colleagues. Med school is the perfect time for that to happen before we all get lost in our own specialties.

This is so well put, @maryturfah. Doctors have an up-close view of colonialism's impacts on the human body. Humanitarianism has often sought to depoliticize, decontextualize, and dehistoricize. We must refuse this if we truly care about humanity, to address the root causes.
