Followup: after some investigation it appears that, although I went through the Google Auth flow, it grabbed the API key that was present in the env. Nothing wrong with using a present API key, but the lack of visibility around the whole thing is a mess.

I use Gnome 3, as I have since its release over a decade ago. For many Linux users, Gnome 3 is bloated and slow (compared to, say, XFCE), or lacking in customizability, or not as keyboard friendly (i3). That's all true! And that's what makes Linux such an awesome ecosystem. 4/N
