Alarming news from Afghanistan:  38 civilians, including women and children, were reportedly killed and 163 injured in last night's attacks by Pakistan on Afghanistan's Paktika, Paktia, and Kunar provinces.

Civilians and civilian infrastructure must never be targeted.

We urge both Pakistani and Afghan military forces to uphold international humanitarian law and work to resolve their disputes through dialogue.

On Monday, Israeli airstrikes (see previous post) *again* damaged our NRC office in Tyre, South Lebanon.

The indiscriminate attack caused severe damage to Jabal Amel Hospital. Four people were killed, and 127 injured.

Patients, who should have been safe inside the hospital, were injured. So were 39 hospital staff, including doctors, nurses and employees who should have been protected while caring for others.

Hospitals must never be targeted. To strike them is a war crime under international law.

For how much longer will these strikes in densely packed urban areas be allowed to continue with such impunity?

The people I've met this week in Iran speak of terrible loss: homes, family members, life savings, but also of the traumatising impact the war has had on children.

Now, economic pressures are robbing them of their hope for the future.

It is vital that we support both the vulnerable Iranian and Afghan refugee population, to prevent a further deepening of this humanitarian crisis.

Visited one of the hardest hit apartment complexes in Tehran, devastated by several missiles on March 9.
Found children toys and school books in the rubble.
Many people killed and wounded after the attack here.

Families fleeing from here have been among the thousands that have received emergency relief from NRC.
Thanks to Norwegian and Swedish support 9000 families who lost everything during the war have received a minimum of relief.
Most donors have given nothing to the Afghan refugees and Iranian civilian victims of the recent war.

🇦🇫🇮🇷 We just returned from the Afghanistan-Iran border to document the escalating impact of the war in Iran on the region.

The human cost:
- Afghan students forced to abandon degrees at Iranian universities.
- Workers fleeing on crutches after being injured by airstrike shrapnel.
- Families still coughing from the smoke of burning oil in Tehran.

The numbers:
- More than 70,000 people crossed into Afghanistan in the first two weeks of March.
- The current pace (1,500–2,000/day) is lower than last year’s mass expulsions of 2M+ Afghans, but Iranian officials have warned humanitarian groups to brace for a massive surge.
- Afghanistan has received the largest influx of people from Iran since the war began. 

Afghans are fleeing one conflict only to risk being caught in another between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Iran has been Afghanistan’s primary trade partner since Pakistan closed its border last year, but the war in Iran is disrupting that partnership. Goods come and go through the border but the hawala systems have collapsed due to internet restrictions in Iran.

This week, our legal aid centre in Spin Boldak in Kandahar was hit and damaged as a result of ongoing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

We urge diplomatic resolutions to be reached and for the immediate protection of civilians and humanitarians on the ground.
