A team of world-class engineers spent countless hours designing the Tokyo railway. Ultimately, they produced one of the world's most complex and efficient urban transportation systems.

Decades later, a group of researchers used slime mold to model the Tokyo train network from scratch. They developed a system nearly identical to the real thing within one day.

The slime mold (Physarum polycephalum) was enticed with oat flakes patterned after the Japanese cities surrounding Tokyo. Over the course of 26 hours, the slime mold established nutrient-channeling networks between the oat flakes, which represented the stops along the Tokyo train network, thereby mirroring the logic of the team of engineers.

Now, researchers are using network-based organisms like slime mold to solve human problems beyond urban transportation. Programming robots, solving complex math problems, and devising fire evacuation routes for skyscrapers are among the challenges assigned to slime molds. These organisms can figure out solutions for a fraction of the cost, significantly faster, and as proficiently as a group of world-class experts.
