I’m delighted to announce our new paper!
We dive into the synergy between sails and optimised routing - which cut pollution by over 30% for a large cargo ships on favourable routes.

New shipping/climate research from @TyndallManc assesses:
i) whether the new @IMOHQ targets are compatible with Paris climate goals
ii) what these targets mean for the imminent refresh of the UK @transportgovuk Clean Maritime Plan

Do the IMO greenhouse gas targets for shipping align with the Paris Agreement?
Our new paper and blog at the @TyndallCentre digs deeper and outlines implications for UK shipping.
Authored with @simonbullock and @AliceClimate.

I was very fortunate to be interviewed yesterday for the @TyndallCentre podcast, Tyndall Talks.
In this new episode, myself and my colleague Asha talk about reducing carbon emissions from planes and ships, and what we can do as individuals to help.

The world has warmed on average ~1°C in the last 80 years. Where will it go in the next 80?
* It looks like we have avoided the worse >3°C
* Current action is consistent with 2-3°C (& rising after 2100)
* Emissions need to go net zero <2100 to ensure <2°C, the earlier the better!
@simon_on_energy Agreed Simon. Unfortunately, many in the sector are risk adverse and are happy to continue under business as usual. This combined with weak climate targets. Lots of effort ongoing, particularly with wind, that attempts to de-risk investments.
After a 3-day train journey to Italy, I'm proud to present my research on stochastic uncertainty at the HIPER conference 2022.
The shipping sector requires imminent action to achieve its climate change targets using technologies such as wind propulsion and weather routing.
Very humbled to win the judges and audience favourite award at the Decarbon8 presentation competition.
Thanks to everyone at @N8Decarbo for a fantastic few days.

Three Decades of Climate Mitigation
What have we achieved?
* 60% rise in fossil CO₂ emissions
* Half of all fossil CO₂ emitted (since 1990)
* Developed countries dominate CO₂ emissions per person

@DWilliams_2021 @KevinClimate@simonbullock@TyndallManc @AliceClimate @schmid_gallego Hey there, sails are one tech option that could provide co2 cuts now to complement longer term decarbonisation. Time is key to tackle cumulative and committed emissions - see https://t.co/nDb2hbJObw
Inaction today makes tomorrow’s challenge harder
@YRanaraja@TyndallCentre @schmid_gallego @AliceClimate @simonbullock@IMOHQ Thanks Yasiru, and I agree, more funds should be available to demonstrate wind projects as it can provide substantial cuts in carbon in the short-term
Really excited to be starting a new EPSRC Fellowship with @TyndallCentre, working with @schmid_gallego and alongside @AliceClimate, @simonbullock and others.
The research will investigate the feasibility of how sail-assisted ships can optimise their voyage in real-time.
