@one2get2no@toadmeister Please do tell me: if the UK reached net zero tomorrow, how much difference would it make to worldwide co2 emissions and what effect would it have on climate change?
@neal_preshner@igbo1st@CheckCharlieB To be fair (and I do try to be fair where I can), the Tories have likewise ruled out a pact with Reform. Nigel has had his “moment in the sun”. It’s time he retired to a beach towel in Clacton.
Compiling hate lists of gay rights and women’s rights groups is something we might have once expected from neo-Nazis.
Now Amnesty International is doing it.
@KingBobIIV What I find very odd, about him, is that he keeps claiming he is some world-leading economist. And yet, when you hear his views, it’s obvious he really hasn’t the 1st clue about the subject.
Fifteen years ago, as a die-hard Corbynite, Labour voter, lefty and Remainer, I'd probably have scoffed at the death of Ann Widdecombe, if I'm honest. I loved Andy Hamilton's Old Harry's Game on BBC Radio 4, and she was the punchline in what felt like every episode.
Looking back, I'm quite ashamed of that version of myself. It wasn't real morality, it was performative virtue.
The last decade has been quite a journey for me, both spiritually and politically, and I don't think the two are unrelated. Watching people rush to celebrate her death, only to frantically delete their posts when it emerged she had been brutally murdered, made me realise how grateful I am not to be that person anymore.
I'm meeting more and more people who've travelled a similar path and arrived at much the same place.
Whatever your politics, don't let hatred become part of your character. Try to pull people up to your level, rather than allowing yourself to be dragged down to theirs.
RIP Ann. You were quite some human being.
@igbo1st@CheckCharlieB Well, I will give you credit for 1 thing. You must be the only person on here whose IQ matches his followers number.
Deliberate, or a fluke?
@igbo1st@CheckCharlieB I have already told you I admire him. It appears that you struggle with basic comprehension. Did you ever complete primary school?
One of the many acts of courage that defined Ann Widdecombe’s public life & service was her willingness to stand alongside those whom others preferred to ignore.
In September 2023, Ann joined the demonstration outside New Scotland Yard to mark Falsely Accused Day, showing solidarity with those whose lives had been devastated by false allegations & miscarriages of justice. She understood that supporting the presumption of innocence & due process did not diminish genuine victims; it strengthened the rule of law on which justice depends.
She spoke publicly about my own experience following Operation Midland, reminding people that false accusations can destroy reputations, livelihoods & lives long before the truth emerges.
During a time when many remained silent, Ann stood up. She did so not because it was politically convenient, but because her deeply held principles demanded it.
That courage, moral conviction & unwavering commitment to justice are among the qualities for which she will be remembered.
It is an example from which many in public life would do well to learn.
Thank you, Ann. Your support will never be forgotten.
@FACTukorg
Appalling tweet, @PeterTatchell, & true to form.
Ann Widdecombe opposed many reforms affecting gay people, & I disagreed with her on a number of them. But to dismiss her as a “bigot” on the day of her death is both unfair & devoid of humanity.
Unfortunately as one of the most high-profile homosexuals of the late 1980s, following my own very public political scandal, I knew Ann well. During the ordeal of Operation Midland, when so many people abandoned me, she did not. She was always at the end of a telephone or an email whenever I needed her. She gave me private, public & practical support when it came at a personal and political cost. What did you do when I denounced it as a “homosexual witch-hunt”?
People are entitled to disagree profoundly with Ann’s views. They are not entitled to erase her kindness, integrity & courage, nor to reduce a lifetime of public service to a single insulting label.
Today should be a day for decency. Sadly, your post reflects none of it.
I rarely post on here anymore, but I have to say to @PeterTatchell:
It shouldn't take the news that an elderly woman was murdered rather than dying of natural causes to change a post from revelry & name-calling to 'R.I.P. Ann.'
The sheer hypocrisy of that cannot be lost on any person of good character.
This is why so many people - gay, straight and anywhere in between - find your rhetoric misogynist, divisive & hateful. People are allowed hold different opinions. We can disagree with them, we can even judge them, but every life is of value and we all leave loved ones behind.
A little bit of kindness, compassion and, quite honestly, basic human decency can go a long way.
@TonyB_1997@andrew_lilico Given that he then said he hadn’t spent a penny of the money on security, and later said that, in fact, the money was for anything he wanted to spend money on, one has to wonder what is the true position, and why he has lied.
@redhousepodcast@ArchRose90 Silence is golden. I will take that as proof that you finally realised you were wrong. Anyway, I enjoyed the chat. Thank you for it. May I suggest that, perhaps next time, a little research might help you see the light a little quicker and save you a lot of typing!
@redhousepodcast@ArchRose90 If his own words aren’t sufficient evidence for you then you must be 1 of the most ignorant people I have ever had the fun of discussing a subject with!
@neal_preshner@igbo1st@CheckCharlieB It’s a disease that affects followers of all political parties. I actually admire him for what he achieved over Brexit but I am adult enough to acknowledge that, on this issue, he is a prat who has only hurt himself.
@igbo1st@CheckCharlieB Who says I want him to go? There is much to admire about Nigel, particularly over Brexit. On this issue, however, he has made a right tit of himself. That you cannot bring yourself to acknowledge this shows you aren’t a serious adult.
@igbo1st@CheckCharlieB The tories and others not standing has made Nigel look like a clown.
The only thing he can now claim, if he wins, is that he beat a bloke who wears a bin on his head. He only has himself to blame.
@justina_h842@SFran51@TalkTV@TVKev@PaulCoxComedy Out of interest, why do you think he has given 2 different excuses for why the £5 million was given to him?
Which excuse do you think was the real reason and why did he lie about the other reason?
