The species is very threatened and only occurs in a few remaining populations that still hold on in Flanders. During a citizen science weekend #kiekngors about 50 to 60 territories were found in total, their future is uncertain and heavily relies on nest protection and feeding.

This time of the year, a first wave of young corn buntings are leaving the nest. They still depend on their parents for several days, the male trying to keep them safe and the female is still feeding them for a week. We study the foraging behavour by observing

@baukevon @waarneming When high up in between the clouds, even such a big raptor is difficult to spot. So yes, that might be the case. Assuming a straight NNE route, it must have passed over Culemborg or Ede. Thermals above the Hoge Veluwe might have given it more lift.

This cinereous vulture disturbed fieldwork today, after an Egyptian vulture did the same one hour and a half before. Over a skylark study site near Wuustwezel (Antwerp), I wasn't expecting these two to pop over... Phonescope shots were the best I could do to document this one.

The adult Egyptian was not seen again, the young Cinereous vulture was seen along a northeastern route further up the Netherlands (Breda, Oosterwijk and Zwolle).
