On Perspective, a @Sansad_TV programme, we delve into the critical conversations from World Water Week 2025 (Aug 24-28, 2025), centered on the theme ‘Water For Climate Action’. Water is more than just a resource—it’s a key driver for stabilizing the climate, protecting ecosystems, and promoting equity for vulnerable communities.
Did you know over 2.2 billion people still lack access to safe drinking water globally (WHO)? Water is fundamental to sustainable development—fueling health, food security, energy, and environmental resilience.
For India, with nearly one-sixth of the world’s population, initiatives like Jal Jeevan Mission, Atal Bhujal Yojana, and Namami Gange are transforming the water future. But with climate change posing new challenges, are we prepared to ensure water systems that are sustainable, reliable, and climate-resilient?
Featuring insights from:
🔹 Mr @janshuman, Senior Fellow & Director, Water Resources Division, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)
🔹 Mr Samir Kumar, Economic Advisor, DDWS, @DoWRRDGR_MoJS

TERI in association with the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana 2.0 (WDC - PMKSY 2.0), Government of Uttar Pradesh, organized a training programme on Climate Resilient Integrated Watershed Management on Tuesday, 18 March 2025. 🌊 🚰 🌦️ ❄️
The one-day event, held in New Delhi, aimed to enhance the capacities of participants with cutting-edge technologies and the best practices necessary for implementing climate-resilient watershed management strategies.
Dr @sahariadipankar, Senior Director, TERI, gave the welcome address for the training programme, and spoke about the importance of Water Shed management. He shared how TERI has been spearheading this movement. “TERI executed the first watershed project in 2000. And we learnt that through watershed management we obviously conserve and save water and preserve soil health,” underscored Dr Saharia. ♻️ 🌍
Dr @heeralalias, CEO, WDC-PMKSY 2.0, Parti Bhumi Vikas Vibhag, @UPGovt gave the keynote address. “We must remember that we have two mothers: one who gave us life, and the other is, ‘Jal, Jungle, and Zameen’ – water, forest, and land. We need to respect them equally and need to nurse our second mother to save ourselves. By doing so, we can significantly lessen the negative impacts of climate change,” said Dr Lal. ⚡ ⛅
@RoopinderDr, Fellow at the Delhi School of Public Policy & Governance, IoE, @UnivofDelhi, founder CISE delivered a special address on the role of policy frameworks in advancing climate resilience. “The practical knowledge of ground workers and farmers needs to be shared with all of us, and with other communities. We must move beyond viewing water simply as water and treat it as a precious commodity and resource,” commented Prof Oberoi. 🏝️ 🎋
Mr Anshuman (@janshuman) Director, TERI, gave the Vote of Thanks for the inaugural session and emphasized that continuous action and learning are essential for successful watershed programme implementation. “The collective commitment towards restoring our water resources is laudable. Water and land are the very backbone of our agri-economy. We need a strong water management system to increase our agricultural productivity and food security and mitigate climate change,” added Mr Anshuman. 🎍

🚰 🌊 On the eve of World Water Day, TERI hosted the 4th Water Sustainability Awards 2024-25, were hosted by TERI in association with @UNDP_India & @DoWRRDGR_MoJS, Govt. of India . 🎖️ 🏆
In his welcome remarks, Mr @janshuman, Director TERI said, “Today's gathering provides us with an opportunity to pause and reflect on one of the most pressing challenges of our time, which is safeguarding our water resources in the face of the climate change.”
Dr @sksarkarteri, Distinguished Fellow TERI, observed, “Glaciers are essential for the agricultural industry, clean energy production and ecosystems. If the glaciers melt rapidly, it will cause uncertainty to water flows, and contribute to the loss of biodiversity, endemic species as well as loss of traditional life.”
Dr Bharat Lal, Secretary General, @India_NHRC gave the Keynote Address. He shared, “We need some serious action now and focus on our glaciers. Especially in South Asia, with three major river basins: Indus, Brahmaputra and Ganges – glaciers are pertinent for our water needs.”
A special panel discussion was also held in the event, which was moderated by Mr Rajeev Kumar Mittal, DG, NMCG. Mr Mittal stated, “Because of various factors, including climate change, we are observing glacial retreat, altered flow of rivers and the phenomena of glacial outburst flood.”

Mr Anshuman, Director, Water Resources Division, TERI, recently participated in the Power-Gen Water Summit and Awards hosted by the Council of Enviro Excellence (CEE).
During the event, he shared key insights from #industrialwateraudits, including those for #ThermalPowerPlants, highlighting actionable strategies to benchmark #wateruseefficiency in water-intensive sectors across India.
It’s inspiring to see these industries taking proactive steps to reduce specific water consumption—a meaningful stride toward a #sustainablewater future! 🌱

Mr @janshuman, Director, TERI, chaired a session 'Challenges in Water Sector Infrastructure' during the 8th India Water Week 2024 on significant themes- #WaterSanitation and #Hygiene (WASH), and Improvement in #WaterUseEfficiency in Existing #WaterInfrastructure.
He mentioned, "India has made significant progress in the #watersector with the mission like #JalJeevanMission but a long way still to go for the country. The per capita water consumption is declining and we are still facing high #waterleakage issue in many cities.”
"While challenges are many and there is long way to go, an integrated approach to address the issue is required along with critical #policyintervention from the government."
The session was Co-Chaired by Ms Amal Talbi, Global Lead for Climate Resilient Irrigation, @WorldBank
The Keynote Address was delivered by Ms @DinaUmali, Regional Director, Sustainable Development, @WorldBank.
The participants also presented their research papers at the session.
