This is FAR more dark than you realize…
We all knew Lindsey Graham was gay.
That’s not the problem.
The problem is he paid male escorts, including a minor, for sex, and was apparently filmed doing so.
That blackmail obviously ended up in the hands of foreign adversaries.
@Liv_Boeree@RichardHanania First three examples that come to mind show mixed results - the atom bomb, the millennium bug, the LHC creating a black hole that would suck up the earth
@Noahpinion The influential covid paper advocating targeted lockdowns ignores suppression is easier when prevalence is lower. eta could be a policy dial, not an assumption. I'd expect a crush&hold optimum and I find it so reckless to publish it at such a critical time
@ramez Standard in my physics&math university teaching. Very effective for me. The optional lectures could be read from the books with a similar gain in understanding, while the often difficult homework problems required help in the mandatory exercise classes.
@vtchakarova without any expertise here, I would guess the world supply of oil/gas balances to an oil price that is close to the price when the strait would be open, and the toll would mostly fall onto producers not the buyers
@Noahpinion What is the capacity implementing these barriers? Like how Europe export halts to Russia turned out impossible because immediately 3rd country trade turned up, or with the trump tariffs all chinese factories in indonesia etc popped up
I think a huge part of the reason why no government has been able to enact difficult pro-growth reforms is that the average voter still believes we remain a rich country.
You hear this in politicians’ rhetoric “the sixth richest country in the world”.
We’re the sixth largest economy but now far from the richest. Per capita we’re tanking down the rankings.
One of the reasons why Poland or China have been able to have growth miracles in recent years is they think like a developing country.
They know they were poor and they have to build to get rich.
We think we are rich and that we don’t have to build anything anymore, or that when we do, it has to be the most expensive possible version of what we build.
Bat tunnels. Fish Discos. Kittiwake hotels.
We think we’re rich so we can afford to chase some wealth creators away, afford to mandate public biodiversity net gain on every development in the country, and afford to ratchet up state pension spending five times faster than the rate of growth in the economy.
We’re suffering from acute ‘rich country delusion’.
It’s only once we realise we’re far poorer than we should be that we can start to fix this nonsense.
