The Scriptural basis for the rejection of Christian triumphalism in political life is Luke 10:19-20, which I think evangelicals would do well these days to ruminate on:

"Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.

Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."

I think the verse represents a political minimalism, which is similarly inscribed into the center of the church's life of prayer: "Hallowed be Thy name."

The church aims for the sanctification of the Lord's name, not its exaltation, triumph, superiority over the nations, etc. God can--and will--accomplish all of that in his time. Until then, the sanctification of the people who bear his name is more than enough to keep us occupied.
