It is a simple question: how is it America First to give up our global influence and allow our adversaries to fill the void?

Tucker Carlson’s new isolationist worldview is what you get when you conceive of the United States as nothing more than sovereign territory—no different from every other country.

When you forsake the ideas and principles that define the United States—like freedom, human dignity and equality, and self-determination—you suddenly have no basis for distinguishing allies from enemies, or for devising a rubric for when it might be necessary to defend our ideas from global erosion. The spread of tyranny abroad and the invasion of other free nations is of no concern to us as long as it doesn’t cross the oceans.

Tucker simply can’t give an account for why Israel is better than Iran or why Ukraine is better than Russia—or why we might prefer one to the other and why it might be worth acting on that preference when either are threatened. To Tucker, these countries are all just sovereign nations like us acting in their own self interest. Who are we to judge their decisions or seek to shape them? They’re them and we’re us. Never mind that they target our President, chant death to our friends, and terrorize free people around the world. As long as they don’t touch us, Tucker says let them be.

Tucker’s is a world devoid of both moral choice and strategic calculation. There’s no such thing as a just cause if America isn’t directly at risk and there’s no reason to act proactively even as other nations rape, pillage, and kill our friends to build up their own strength before coming for us.

Tucker’s view is simplistic nonsense—but it’s simplistic nonsense that is convenient and easy for many Americans to swallow if not carefully refuted, particularly after our recent failures in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We can’t just cite a Bible verse or speak in conclusory statements. Those who still believe that the United States has an important and proactive role to play in leading the free world have not done a good enough job making the very powerful argument for American leadership, refuting the Tuckers of the world, and persuading the American people that it is still worth our time and treasure to lead in this way.

So in a period of less than 2 months, individuals openly claiming to be motivated by the “free Palestine” movement have:

- Tried to burn down the home of the Jewish Pennsylvania Governor with his family inside.

- Executed a couple leaving a Jewish museum in DC

- Thrown Molotov cocktails at elderly Jewish people advocating to free hostages in Colorado.

The intifada is already here. The people who tried to downplay this threat should be ashamed.
