"Students will become good readers when they read more.Students will read more when they enjoy reading. They will enjoy reading when they enjoy their reading material. They will enjoy their reading material when they are left to choose it themselves..." Alfie Kohn
Do English teachers invite students to write poetry because we expect they will all become published poets? No. But if they never try it, none will. And what if we knew all nurses, accountants, mechanics etc. had the experience of crafting poems throughout their education? 🤔
I would treat "test writing" as a separate genre, and I would only teach it right before the test. The rest of the year is "real world" writing. If kids write well, they will do fine on the tests. They will not write well if they only do test prep writing.

I'm not really a call out person but for all of the English teachers who are only correcting spelling, commas, and MLA format errors and think they are teaching writing, you are mistaken. 1/1
Free writing advice: Stop not writing. Just do it—do it afraid; filled w/self doubt. Put a 1” picture frame nearby and just write what’s in it—1 passage, an idea, a memory, a possible opening. And do it really badly. Write an incredibly shitty 1st draft of this one thing. You in?
