These people aren’t just selfish. They’re also full of themselves.
A legal business wants to open on a commercial street, and a small group of locals suddenly think they get to decide what stores are allowed. That’s not protecting the neighbourhood. That’s just telling other people what they can and can’t do.
If you like independent shops, go spend money there. Don’t hide behind petitions and “historic character” to block a McDonald’s. Nobody is forcing you to eat there.
Trying to control what other people can open is what actually makes a neighbourhood worse.

78.1% of Toronto Homes Sold Below Asking in July

Nearly eight in ten Toronto-area homes changed hands below their final asking price in July, while just 18.7% sold above it, according to HouseSigma. The median sale closed 2.8% — or $23,000 — below list. Condos led the retreat at 83% selling below asking, and at the top end, 86.4% of homes priced at $2-million-plus sold below asking with a median 5.55% discount. It's a dramatic shift from February 2022, when 86.1% sold above asking.

But here's the reality check: July 2026 ranks 11th out of 24 years for below-asking sales — essentially the middle of the pack. Negotiation, not bidding wars, is the historical norm.
