Our paper "Mitochondrial proteome of Acanthamoeba delineates aerobic and anaerobic pathways dynamically regulated by oxygen" is online now @CellCellPress! https://t.co/NPjdwdwcHD. Grateful to my amazing post-doc mentor @VamsiMootha and all the other team members!
Remarkable Magnum Opus from @VamsiMootha & the Mitocarta Tree of Life consortium consisting of 9 back to back research papers (+2 perspectives) just released in Cell and Cell family journals:
- Characterization of mito proteomes from 6 diverse species, from Giardia to Leishmania to Arabidopsis
- Optimized methods for mito enrichment, DIA mass spec, protein correlation profiling, microscopy validation, and cryoEM analysis of native complexes
- Comparative analysis reveals dozens of proteins shared among pathogens but lost in human hosts = “pan-parasite” drug targets
- Data used to re-train ML predictor of subcellular localization => predicted mitoproteomes across hundreds of eukaryotes
- Giardia solute carrier discovered with functional validation
- Dynamic rewiring of Acanthamoeba mito proteome from aerobic to anaerobic energy production characterized
And tons more… The papers are instant landmarks and raise even more questions than they answer, paving the way for many future investigations of this fascinating organelle #mitochondria

I (fondly) remember as a TA insisting Berkeley undergrads memorize the Krebs cycle and OxPhos ('it's good for your soul,' id say). We'd draw the Krebs cycle as a loop floating free in the mitochondrion, and the respiratory chain as a separate machine in the membrane. In one organism they are bolted together.@VamsiMootha

In a 28-year-old woman with postpartum immune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, plasma exchange was unsuccessful. Near death while receiving vasopressors, she was treated with recombinant ADAMTS13, and the disease abated. Read the Brief Report: https://t.co/rhdVbWFcnA

@MGHPathology Grateful to be a member of the @MGHPathology team! Awesome first two months as a transfusion fellow—kicked off with fellow @UWMSTP alum @AmeliaHaj, MGH BTS attending Patty Brunker, and heme/onc fellow Christine Ryan, among others!
Blood clots can develop in patients with #COVID19, but the mechanisms are unclear. Could we predict patients at high risk? We started to learn more about this while working on the @MGHPathology coagulation service during the pandemic peak: https://t.co/eFDh2hFMjc @MassGeneralNews
After 10+ fantastic years in Madison, it is bittersweet to announce that my lab and I are moving to @WUSTLmed soon. I am so grateful to everyone at @UWBiochem and @Morgridge_Inst for their support and guidance. Stay healthy, and come visit us in St. Louis!
