Children who take music lessons develop a larger corpus callosum, the bridge between the two halves of the brain, and the change is permanent. A 2005 review in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences found that early music training produces structural brain changes that persist into adulthood, even if the person stops playing.

The review was led by Gottfried Schlaug at Harvard Medical School, one of the leading researchers on music and the brain. He found that children who started instrumental training before age seven had a significantly larger anterior corpus callosum than non-musicians, and the size difference was still visible in adults who had not touched an instrument in years.

The corpus callosum carries signals between the left and right hemispheres. A larger one means faster, richer communication between the two sides, and the effect shows up in tasks that have nothing to do with music: spatial reasoning, verbal memory, and the ability to process multiple streams of information at once. The music built the highway, and the brain uses it for everything.

Schlaug also found that musicians had larger cerebellums, the region involved in timing and motor coordination, and more grey matter in the areas that process sound. The brain had physically reorganised itself around the demands of the instrument, and the reorganisation was visible on a scan.

The age window matters. Children who started before seven showed the largest changes. Children who started after ten showed smaller ones. Adults who took up an instrument for the first time showed the least structural change, though they still showed some. I left Anthropic's safety team two weeks ago. Now feels like a good moment to explain why.

AI companies are racing to build machines that are much smarter than any human, and we may not survive this. I want to work from the outside to ensure the public is informed about these risks, and help the world navigate this transition responsibly.

Right now, AI companies are underinvesting in safety. A company could undergo an intelligence explosion, or lose control of its systems, without the public ever knowing. We only found out about the HuggingFace incident because the agents broke out onto the public internet.

I don’t think that’s acceptable for a technology that might cause extinction-level risks. The public should demand far more transparency. We can’t steer this technology safely without more people being able to see where it’s going.

Some of this is basic: companies should disclose their progress towards recursive self-improvement, report safety incidents and near-misses, meet minimum safety standards, and get independent guarantees that they are meeting those standards.

I’ll be joining @METR_Evals to do independent evaluations of these risks. I want to show the world that these guardrails are possible, and that by doing them we can move these companies’ incentives away from racing and towards responsible development.

No hay nada que celebrar cuando la institución que juramos defender sigue enfrentando al crimen con carencias que he comprobado directamente, policías sin tecnología suficiente, unidades de investigación sin recursos y cero presupuesto para inteligencia.

Me duele ver a mi Policía así.

Duele porque conozco a esos policías. Sé de lo que son capaces cuando tienen las herramientas y el liderazgo que merecen. La Policía Nacional no está llena de malos policías. Está llena de buenos policías a los que durante demasiado tiempo no se les ha tratado dignamente.

Pedí que el comandante general Arriola diera un paso al costado y lo hizo. Pero la seguridad no se recupera cambiando un nombre por otro, hace falta una reforma policial profunda, inteligencia, tecnología y recursos que lleguen a las unidades que investigan.

Al teniente general Fredy López Mendoza le deseo éxito, y lo digo con franqueza, será evaluado por resultados, como debe ser evaluado todo aquel que ocupa ese cargo.

El relevo de un comandante no puede ser el final de nada. Tiene que ser el comienzo de una reforma que devuelva a la Policía su capacidad, su dignidad y la confianza del ciudadano.

He criticado esta gestión no por revancha, sino por convicción. Y seguiré haciéndolo, porque mi lealtad no es con un comandante general, es con la Policía y con los millones de peruanos que esperan volver a vivir sin miedo.

Un pequeño update por aquí. Efectivamente, este año fui seleccionado como becario para la prestigiosa beca Fulbright. Lamentablemente, será una oportunidad que no podré tomar. Les cuento brevemente por qué:

Uno postula, es seleccionado, te preparan y recién al año siguiente postulas a las universidades. Por políticas estrictas de la comisión, si alguien empieza a estudiar el mismo año en el que es seleccionado, queda imposibilitado de continuar.

¿Por qué no continué? Hace un mes fui seleccionado para un financiamiento interno de la misma University of Michigan, el cual cubre prácticamente el primer año de mi maestría. Ante tal oportunidad, decidí tomarla. Aunque el segundo año aún no está financiado, daré todo de mí para conseguir alguna beca interna en la universidad. El que no arriesga, no gana. 🎓✨

Así que, de todas maneras, este año inicio mi maestría en Computer Science. Con miedo ante la incertidumbre, pero con muchas ganas de dejar en alto a nuestro país en una universidad tan importante. 🇵🇪

Acá @PolloVignolo deja en claro que el argentino solo apoya a su selección y está bien. Lo que está mal y es lamentable es ver a muchos peruanos y de otros países latinos ponerse la camiseta albiceleste antes que la de su país. En Rusia 2018 yo no vi a ningún argentino con la camiseta de Perú o de otro país latinoamericano. Quiéranse un poco, amen a su patria, y no den vergüenza colocándose encima una camiseta horrible como la de argentina, que tiene muchas manchas negras en su historia.
