Last thing I’m going to say about this terrible day before reading my (excellent) Keith McNally book and figuring out a way to stay in Italy permanently next week-

Even if you didn’t agree with Charlie Kirk’s views or opinions, (believe me, there were plenty I didn’t), celebrating his death or even meeting it with apathy is about as un-American as it gets.

Freedom of speech and the ability to voice your opinion without fear of being silenced, persecuted, or in this case, murdered, is supposed to be what separates us from the rest of the world.

Somehow, that basic truth is lost on so many people today. Because someone disagrees with your beliefs or challenges your worldview, the response has become to try to erase them completely. That’s not progress. It’s the complete opposite.

A life was taken today by people who don’t even understand the actual meaning of the word “fascism,” believing they were striking down a symbol of it, when in reality, Charlie was simply exercising his God-given right as an American and encouraging others to do the same. That core principle seems to have been completely forgotten.

We are so lost and divided as a country right now that it’s terrifying. There was ANOTHER school shooting today, and it barely even registered. Barely made the news. That’s how desensitized we’ve become.

Instead, everyone is locked in on this murder because it’s another opportunity to pick sides, to fight, to draw clicks and eyeballs. Our priorities are completely upside down. There’s no value placed on human life anymore.

Just outrage, blame, and tribalism.

And at the end of the day, nobody actually wins. We all lose. And it’s fucking exhausting.
