NEWS: Southwest Airlines has just announced that it will install @Starlink across its entire fleet.

The first Starlink-equipped aircraft will enter service this summer, and it will be available on more than 300 aircraft by the end of 2026. Starlink Wi-Fi will be free for all passengers.

I've never felt this much behind as a programmer. The profession is being dramatically refactored as the bits contributed by the programmer are increasingly sparse and between. I have a sense that I could be 10X more powerful if I just properly string together what has become available over the last ~year and a failure to claim the boost feels decidedly like skill issue. There's a new programmable layer of abstraction to master (in addition to the usual layers below) involving agents, subagents, their prompts, contexts, memory, modes, permissions, tools, plugins, skills, hooks, MCP, LSP, slash commands, workflows, IDE integrations, and a need to build an all-encompassing mental model for strengths and pitfalls of fundamentally stochastic, fallible, unintelligible and changing entities suddenly intermingled with what used to be good old fashioned engineering. Clearly some powerful alien tool was handed around except it comes with no manual and everyone has to figure out how to hold it and operate it, while the resulting magnitude 9 earthquake is rocking the profession. Roll up your sleeves to not fall behind.

Agency > Intelligence

I had this intuitively wrong for decades, I think due to a pervasive cultural veneration of intelligence, various entertainment/media, obsession with IQ etc. Agency is significantly more powerful and significantly more scarce. Are you hiring for agency? Are we educating for agency? Are you acting as if you had 10X agency?

Noo! Same happened to me when moving from CA to OK.

We had a contract and already paid. Next morning after our belongings loaded on a semi we got a call demanding another payment via wire in the next hour or our things would be offloaded to an undisclosed warehouse.

We filed complaints with attorney general and FMCSA. Sadly, this is common. These companies operate for 1-2 years as an LLC. Fold up and re-open.

We paid the ransom while in the moment. But in hindsight it was not worth it. We could have bought all new belongings. And once they delivered they broke many things and of course their “insurance” was joke.

Reddit’s own app generates revenue by way of ads and tokens.

“Too much” is certainly subjective. Would you rather Reddit lay-off 20 engineers?

Personally, I’d rather see Reddit simply say no more third party API access.

But I’m speculating Reddit doesn’t mind if third parties want their data ( a la ChatGPT) as long as they get compensated. As far as Apollo, it’s likely no love lost.

Hi Mark. Tim is correct. Static content like images, JavaScript, and html are orders of magnitude easier to store and serve. They can be done by any number of CDNs fairly inexpensively.

Contrast to an API responsible for auth, mutable comments, user graphs, up/down votes, content filtering and moderation, and more.
