@LibertasA12364 @bowtiedstocks Yeah, it costs ~$40k/year to rent a $1 million house in Adelaide, but it costs at least $60k/year in interest alone to borrow $1 million to buy that house. Renters are already maxed out so that's quite a spread "investors" are betting will be filled by capital growth.

@bowtiedstocks Yup, in 2024 I met with an accountant/financial adviser who spent most of the session trying to persuade me to switch my (diversified) super plan to SMSF and spend it all on an investment property in Tarneit, VIC. In hindsight I dodged a bullet by not following that advice.

@levelsio Years ago I checked out a local gov run coworking space for a couple of hours. Discovered that the WiFi network blocked outgoing ssh connections by default. Apparently IT could unblock individual computers, but at that point I just gave up and went home.

@dhh I'm pretty happy w/ my LG washing machine & heat pump dryer. I was initially skeptical but integration w/ the LG ThinkQ app is genuinely useful as it notifies me when washing/drying cycles have finished so I can unload the machines. (I'm lucky to WFH.)

@Chris_arnade @GrayConnolly Note that when Aussies talk about "suburbs", there's a very well understood ranking of which suburbs are most and least desirable, and which suburb you live in establishes you pretty firmly in the social pecking order.

This was satirized very effectively by Dame Edna (RIP).

Similar constraint in Ontario, Canada (!), due to Ontario Greenbelt which was officially created to "restrict urban sprawl".

@Chris_arnade @GrayConnolly Australian suburbs close to CBDs tend to be most desirable, just not affordable, so young people & immigrants typically can only afford to buy in outer suburbs. Opposite is usually the case in big US cities.

@Chris_arnade @Dollarydoos_ I'm biased, but I think you should come to Adelaide. There are buses from SYD to Adelaide. Adelaide is much more compact than either SYD or MEL but still lots of variety in terms of suburbs and terrain. IMO it also has a more blue collar feel than either SYD or MEL.

@Chris_arnade How Fujifilm successfully made the transition to the era of digital photography, and Kodak did not, is an interesting business case study.

Ironically Fujifilm makes more money today from its Instax instant film cameras (cf Polaroid) than from its (excellent) digital cameras.
