Dear Zora,

Thank you for conveying SA Resolution 61: Calling for the Termination of Cornell University’s Partnership with the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology While Preserving Cornell Tech. I reject this resolution, which fundamentally conflicts with Cornell’s principles of academic collaboration and our core commitment to academic freedom.
Cornell Tech is not a political entity. It is an academic partnership, created through shared investment by Cornell University, the Technion, and the City of New York for the benefit of the city and the state, according to a negotiated set of conditions that govern its development and the terms of its 99-year ground lease on Roosevelt Island. As one of Cornell University’s many international partnerships and collaborations, Cornell Tech deepens, enriches, and strengthens the ability of our students, faculty, and staff to pursue knowledge and advance the university’s academic mission. The Joan and Irwin Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute, the core international partnership upon which Cornell Tech is based, is an extraordinarily valuable collaboration focusing on education and research in health tech, media tech, and urban tech, and supporting the development of new startup companies.

Severing our relationship with the Technion—or with any entity affiliated with governments, institutions, or enterprises with which some of our community members disagree—as a statement of political protest, would not only hinder our research, teaching, and public engagement; it would imperil our academic principles.

Our university, like all of our peer institutions, regularly faces pressure—from across the political spectrum, from within and beyond our own community—to make academic decisions according to political priorities. The phenomenon is not a new one: universities have grappled with such pressures from governments and societies for as long as the institution of the university has existed. When we yield to these pressures and proscribe specific collaborations or collaborators on grounds other than merit, we compromise our principles of academic freedom, undermine our own institutional excellence, and damage public trust in our work.  
Moreover, this resolution inaccurately asserts that “the continued operation of Cornell Tech as a Cornell University campus does not require an ongoing partnership with the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.” Cornell Tech, while part of Cornell, is a joint effort of the university, the Technion, and the City of New York. It is no more possible for Cornell to unilaterally terminate that effort and claim full control of the campus than it would be for the Technion or the City of New York to do the same.

Finally, I am deeply troubled by the selective manner in which this resolution singles out the Technion, alone of Cornell’s many international partners, for censure. Cornell currently maintains 159 active agreements with institutions in 59 nations and regions; all of these institutions have some government affiliation, and many conduct research with military and security applications. Cornell itself has military research contracts, conducts research with potential military applications, and has relationships with companies whose products are used in military contexts. Cornell also has relationships with institutions in countries whose governments have been accused of human rights violations—as our own has been. 
None of these publicly available facts are mentioned in the resolution; only our partnership with an Israeli institution is targeted for erasure. The political bias evident in this selective approach is deeply disturbing, and the resolution is incompatible with both the Student Assembly’s purpose and Cornell University’s core values. I reject it fully and forcefully.

America didn’t need to do this -- to invest so much political capital and military firepower -- just to shore up a second-run Israeli operation, nor is it reasonable to believe, as Secretary Rubio claimed, that it's all because of potential Iranian counter-strikes against US forces.

Months of American buildup, America setting the timing and pulling the trigger on the operation, and the growing and increasingly dangerous strategic ties between Iran and China for America's ability to face down its chief adversary in the Pacific -- these are all evidence that this was an American decision, and that Israel is playing second fiddle this time around.

There are now two wars underway in Iran, not one: The longstanding Israel-Iran war playing out on the regional chessboard, and the much larger US-China confrontation on the global chessboard.

They overlap significantly in terms of the two nations' banks of targets in Iran -- but that overlap may not hold to the end.

Two wars, not one. If you can only see one of them, you'll misunderstand what's happening now and what happens next.

Things to understand in 2025:

“Death to America” does not *really* mean death to America. Same applies to “Death to Britain”. And “Death to Israel”. It’s just a clever play on words about ‘society’.

“A curse upon the Jews” does not *really* mean a curse upon the Jews. It’s just the Houthis being cryptic. Besides, those guys in Yemen “make us proud!”

“Globalise the Intifada” does not *really* mean globalising the intifada. The intifadas killed countless civilians in bus bombings and suicide attacks. *This* intifada is something different, despite being the same word about the same country said by the same type of people.

Screaming for “Jihad!” is fine. It just means ‘struggle’. Do it next time you’re on the bus.

Screaming “Allahu Akbar!” is also fine. It just means ‘God is most great’. Do it in the supermarket, just to prove it.

Building a secretive nuclear facility half a mile underneath a mountain in the arse-end of nowhere is not suspicious. It was just real estate that became available at the time. It’s for ‘peaceful purposes’

Calling your neighbour a “cancer” that “needs to be eradicated” is just banter.

Shouting “up Hamas, up Hezbollah” while draped in a Hezbollah flag does not mean you support either, silly.

Israel ends the Gaza war in exchange for the return of the hostages, a commitment for a new civilian government in Gaza, and reconstruction overseen and funded by the Saudis and the Gulf States who monitor and guarantee security with oversight from the U.S. to ensure no more tunnels and no more terrorists.

Gaza becomes a beautiful place to live and work. There are real benefits to planning and building a new territory with new cities from a blank sheet of paper using modern technology, energy resources, and modern approaches to design and sustainability.

The Abraham Accords expand to include Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Middle East. An economic boom emerges in the Middle East.

Some preliminary thoughts on the overnight Israel Air Force operation inside Iran. The target banks appears to have effectively set a tactical “trap,” by simultaneously targeting approximately 20 of Iran’s critical air defense and missile production infrastructure sites.

The operation dismantled Iran’s advanced ground radar and air defense systems, which had been safeguarding Tehran and the IRGC-AF’s critical offensive missile capabilities, while also crippling Iran’s missile production by destroying mixing facilities essential for manufacturing surface-to-surface missiles.

For example, early reports indicate that in Mahshahr, where four Iranian soldiers were reportedly killed, and near Abadan, Khuzestan province radar sites were destroyed. This air defense infrastructure is positioned in western Iran above the Persian Gulf at the push point for the IAF on its way to deeper targets within Iran, and therefore signals IAF shaping operations.

On the other hand, the fuel production sites are where Iran produces and mixes the propellant used in its solid-fuel surface-to-surface missiles. The “mixers” at these facilities are large industrial machines used to blend chemical components in solid rocket fuel; a fuel binder (typically a polymer like HTPB - Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene), an oxidizer (like ammonium perchlorate), and powdered metals (like aluminum). The mixing process of these elements is precise and critical as the blend’s consistency directly affects the rocket motor’s performance, stability, burn rate, etc.

Destroying these mixing facilities severely impedes Iran’s missile capabilities by cutting off its capacity to produce the solid fuel needed for new missiles. This is a serious blow for Tehran’s missile program given the complexity and risk involved in setting up new facilities which require specialized safety measures and are typically housed in secure, often underground locations to minimize vulnerability to attack.

Provided the operation was a success as claimed, as a result, Iran lost its immediate capacity to produce new missiles, though it still retains an estimated arsenal of 1,500 to 3,000 ballistic missiles with a known minimum simultaneous launch capability of approximately 200.

In eliminating both air defenses and production capabilities, Israel effectively ‘traps’ Iran’s response options, while opening tactical opportunities to directly target offensive missile launch sites and strategic windows to address Iran’s nuclear program and critical economic infrastructure, including oil facilities.

There has been a disturbing trend in pro-Israeli Twitter. Whether it is claiming that symbols like the Palestinian flag and the Keffyiah are antisemitic, wanting to arrest and deport protestors, or labeling anyone who cares about Palestinian lives as "pro-Hamas," it is a tendency towards denying Palestinians the right to express themselves. That is tantamount to denying their right to exist. If someone does that to Jews, we rightfully call that antisemitism.

Israel does not seek anything more than justice. What is Justice for Israel, and for the world?

To bring our hostages home. To bury our dead with dignity. To hold those responsible for the deaths of our citizens to account, and to bring those responsible for dragging our youth into an unjust war using children, women and elderly as shields, to justice.

We demand security, yet we have always sought peace with our neighbors. We are fighters, yet we are the people of the book. But the days of powerless Jewish people are long-gone. Thousands of years of slavery, slaughter and oppression are washing away, like waves cascading off the cliffs of a mountain emerging from the ocean floor in the wake of a tectonic rupture. Israel is a great deal more powerful than the region realizes. And the world underestimates the rage October 7 has caused.

Israel will move forcefully to make it possible for its citizens to come home, erect memorials to honor the loved ones we have lost, and to begin to rebuild our towns in safety and security. But we, as a nation, do not want this war and we do not seek to harm uninvolved civilians.

While Jihad in Islamic jurisprudence signifies a spiritual struggle, Islamist extremists wage unholy war for our destruction, and yet, Israel does not seek theirs; it seeks Justice.

For many Jewish people across the globe and in the nation of Israel “Never again” died on Oct 7. In its place today, the rebellious fire sounding out of every rifle and cannon of the Israel Defense Forces is an explosive “NOT THIS TIME” that is being heard and felt around the world.

These actors, who seek nothing less than the erasure of Israel and its people, will not have their way, and the international community shall be well-informed of this.
