I joined duolingo ~10 years ago, back when we could fit the entire company in one room above a sports bar in Pittsburgh, PA.

Back then, I could get Luis’ attention by reaching across my desk and tapping him on the shoulder. Things are a little different these days.

Today, we have 800+ employees in 6 offices around the world working on developing the best education and making it universally available to 113 million+ monthly learners.

So Luis and Severin decided to write a handbook explaining not just how we build great products, but how we’ve built a great company.

But this isn’t just for new employees. Just like our products, we wanted the book to be available to everyone — so we released it publicly.
