This guy is completely clueless—it’s almost laughable.
This guy doesn’t seem to understand how the body naturally adjusts the height of the strike zone. If he truly studied film of the greats, he’d realize that on a higher pitch, the nose has to float more through the belly button to keep the barrel in the zone. A higher pitch also requires the barrel to stay in the zone longer after contact. Because of its location, a high pitch needs to be hit further out in front, which is why higher, faster pitches seem even quicker—the contact point is earlier.
On a higher pitch, there’s generally less stride, as seen in Cory Seager’s videos comparing high and low pitches. On lower pitches, hitters tend to stride out more to lower their center of gravity, allowing the back knee to create more upward movement. He also fails to understand that every swing has a different finish.
The finish on a high pitch is more around the front shoulder due to how the shoulders move throughout the swing. The release of the finish must match the pitch’s location—if it doesn’t, it results in an "around" or "off" swing because of improper shoulder movement. Not every pitch location results in the same finish.
He’s ignorant because he only studies swings that align with his own agenda, failing to educate himself on how the body moves around center mass properly. He doesn’t grasp that the body reacts differently in a running situation versus a non-running, home run swing.
Great hitters know when they’ve hit a home run the moment they make contact, allowing them to lean back and admire their shot. In a running situation, the body behaves differently. He wouldn’t know that because he only teaches an uppercut, home run-oriented swing.
Additionally, he fails to understand that a right-handed hitter can’t perfectly mimic a left-handed swing due to natural body mechanics. A lefty can pull out of posture earlier because their momentum carries them toward first base post-contact. A right-handed hitter, however, must stay over themselves longer to get pulled under toward first base after contact.
He needs to study up—he’s not as smart as he pretends to be.
On deck timing…Smith measuring start and release time and then checking in with his land time compared to the batter. Big benefit when the hitter before you shares a similar move.
