The stone age was enabled by human bio-mechanics (flint-knapping) facilitated by opposable thumbs and the endosomatic energy of elbow grease.
Ultimately the stone age didn't end primarily because we were smart enough to think... "hey let's use bronze/iron instead," it occured because we learned how to use far higher quality exosomatic energy in the form of charcoal burning to smelt metal into bronze and later iron tools.
Humans can have all the brain power in the world but if we cant harness high quality exosomatic energy flows with nimble opposable thumbs then sword weilding humans are just as improbable as bronze age dolphins.
Our current industrial civilization in all of its complexity is underpinned by in turn far higher quality fossil fuels than charcoal.
Almost every single economic activity in our societies and supply chains involves a small or large flame almost exclusively of fossil origin whether its in an internal combustion engine or a blast furnace.
Vaclav Smil's four pillars of civilization: Steel, Ammonia, Plastics and Cement are utterly reliant on fossil fuels at anything resembling the meaningful scale required to nurture 8 billlion humans.
"But I've seen a pilot project for Green Steel/Ammonia/Bio-plastics/Fossil free cement" you will say...
All of these processes are dramatically less energetically viable and therefore less economic. We can subsidize them into existence and modestly improve them but ultimately they rely on inferior flows of energy, enable less work and therefore would fail to maintain current human carrying capacity on planet earth.
The only reason we can afford the subsidies for said pilot projects is because they are paid for with the extraordinary surpluses generated not by capital or labour but rather cheap, abundant and versatile fossil energy.
To suggest that wind, solar, nuclear, geothermal, batteries are even significantly substitutable for most fossil fuel services commits the "classical economics" sin of treating energy like any other input and ignoring its centrality as the master resource and differing enerrgy qualities of different sources.
We are utterly dependent on fossil energy to power the extraction, refining, manufacture, construction and transport of these alternative energy sources/carriers... and for the subsidies required to enable the lower energy quality sources particularly the combination of wind/solar/batteries.
Therein lies the decarbonization rub and the Gordion Knot of solving climate change that we find ourselves in.
I would love an Alexander the Great to cleave the rope that binds us and free us from this predicament and would be oh so happy to be challenged and proven wrong.
@sentdefender High-frequency view of Guyanese oil produciton
(Venezuela's territorial claims against Guyana extend to emcompass most of the prolific offshore oil blocks)
The Brazilian Armed Forces have reportedly been placed into a Heightened State of Readiness due to a Significant Movement of Military Equipment and Personnel in Eastern Venezuela on the Border of Guyana which has recently been Detected, with Officials believing that Venezuela may soon Invade the Small South American Country in order to Annex the “Guayana Esequiba” Region which accounts for over 60% of the Nation’s Territory and has been Claimed by the Venezuelan Government.
Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Our Lord for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of Net Zero by 2050. - Acts 2:38 (modified)
@suitedupwook Yes absolutely, unless it’s midday with a lot of glare. All comes down to oled ability to reproduce perfect black in each pixel vs blocking light from a source to make a picture. Resolution will be the same, hdr content is where oled will shine especially the new 1000+ nit sets
The Significance of the XOM & PXD Deal. Thanks to my friends at FLOW.
$XOM acquisition of $PXD has ramifications for the entire industry.
Not only could they potentially re-achieve a share of U.S. oil production that they haven’t seen since the days of Standard Oil but according to my friends at FLOW this deal has significance for how we will view the Permian and the capital intensity cycle as a whole.
Big shout out to @TomLoughrey_LFE and @reedbarrett1302!
@aeberman12 Do you really think the trend is different over time? Here's the data from 1750-2018.
People don't give a shit about emissions. Every person on the earth wants to be up and to the right on this graph. Just ask the ones who are in the bottom left.

Steve Jobs knew that Oil and Gas was the technological revolution that made society what it is today.
It set the foundation for humans to work towards artificial intelligence.
@larrabeest@zacurate @4cast_io I believe it for July stubs, May production WTI averaged $70, with ngl running 30-35% WTI. If using forward $80/bbl, ngls should be higher. Modeling 3 stream with ngl and residue gas should have a 65-70% shrink but if you're getting paid on 2 stream, 10% shrink 1.23 btu works
