As for morality... have you never heard of ethical subjectivism? Or emotivism? Might want to look into opposing perspectives sometime.

In many cases, atheism is the product or result of a worldview rather than a foundational principle.

You're assuming that intent and asserting there must be an answer in the positive sense.
The more honest question would be, "Is there a 'why' to this universe and us?". I don't see a reason to accept your answer of God.

However, this does not preclude an individual atheist from being religious.

Nobody is really trying to defend the Satan character's actions. So, there is no need to criticize.
God, however, is defended at every turn. Many atheists view God's actions as reprehensible, so the defense of said actions is equally reprehensible. Ergo, criticism.

I see that the same evidence can also support a naturalistic explanation. And, from my studies, the natural is a far more parsimonious model for said evidence than the god hypothesis.
