Kids are grade 4 & 6 this year. Read them the snapshots of the new curriculum. After reading the Phys Ed & Wellness sections they want to know why the government wants them to feel bad about their bodies. 9 & 11 year old girls picked up on that pretty damn quick. CC: @JanisIrwin
All these rural folks in Alberta signing a "independence" petition because they are unhappy with their economic conditions or opportunities might want to consider which party they have been voting for at the provincial level for the last 50 years. Just sayin...
Remember when Danielle Smith condemned the "arrogance" of a government for passing laws in a matter of days?
Now she's rammed through a law stripping teachers' charter rights in a single day.
Seems the "democratic process" no longer matters to her now that she's in power

@kim_siever Yep. Same with my 16yo. Kids sitting on the floor or countertops while also being taught two grades of English at the same time. It’s……..so great.
It shouldn't be called the 'notwithstanding' clause, it should be called the "we know this law violates your rights, but we’re doing it anyway” clause.
Other provincial labour federations, including the Ontario Federation of Labour, will start collecting funds to build a war chest to help pay fines. Danielle Smith may have thought she could bully the teachers into submission. We are not going to let that happen.

And, CLC President Bea Bruske will fly to Alberta for our press conference on Wednesday to pledge the support of the entire labour movement. My message to Danielle Smith is also simply. You’re the bully going after workers rights & democracy. We will stand up to the bully.
My message to Alberta teachers is simple: you will not stand alone. Tomorrow all other Alberta unions will meet to finalize a plan for unprecedented collective action. The executive council of the Canadian Labour Congress will also meet in emergency session.
@demetriosnAB And one teacher added to the entire school is not going to help this. This is disgusting behaviour by this government. Absolutely disgraceful.
@demetriosnAB You heard absolutely nothing teachers have said. They voted NO to the last contract by over 85%
My gr 11 kid has 39 kids in her LA class, where kids sit on the floor if they all show up bc they don’t have enough seats, & is being taught with the grade 10s. How is this acceptable?

Since 2019, the UCP diverted $4B to charter/private schools
This could fund:
🏫- 92 New Schools
🗃️- 20,000 Portable Classrooms
👩🏫- 38,500 New Teachers
🧑🏫- 118,000 Ed Assistants
🧑🎓- Supports for 760,000 Students
The UCP choose to defund public education instead.
The funny thing that happens whenever essential workers go on strike to get fair deals and supports, is there’s always that group of people who think it’s selfish, without thinking what they would do in the same situation
